TBS Tango 2 Better Than R9m?
#1
I am building a 7" long range quad. I bought a taranis qx7 that came with the r9m module and am using it for my 5" and it works great but was wondering if anyone has used it for a long range build. what kind of range can you get with it? how reliable is it from peoples experiences? My thought was to purchase the tango 2 since it comes equipped with crossfire but only up to 250mw when the r9m goes up to 915mw. Has anyone use the tango for longe range and if so what kind of range can you get with it?

Kaitylynn here has gone over 3km with the R9M system. Maybe she can chime in. All the bugs seem to be worked out. I personally have the R9M too, but really haven't used it for long range.

Why wouldn't you get a Crossfire module? You do have to do a small modification to get it to work with QX7.

If you're interested in the range of the 250mW Tango 2, have a look at the following post...

https://intofpv.com/t-tbs-tango-2-transm...4#pid83174

Obviously that is in a location with no noise floor or other interference, so the absolute best you could ever expect in 100% ideal conditions and location.

i'm a little worried about modifying my qx7. Read horror stories about them. I'm also having a bunch of problems with the r9m and binding with my slim +.  I've ordered a new receiver (slim+ ota) in hopes that the problem lies with my old slim+. I like the look and functionality of the tango also. Really just weighing out my options and seeing what works for everybody else. 3 km is plenty for me.

I watched this video earlier and this is one of the reasons i was thinking about getting one. I'm obviously not going to fly 51 km out but i like the idea of being able to go that far.

I'd take those TBS videos with a grain of salt and look for a "regular joe" range test using the Tango. TBS has since day one been all about long range. I'm convinced those dudes got some voodoo up their sleeve that us normal folk just can't get.

I totally agree. That's why I'm asking on here to get the opinions of regular people before i decide to spend the money to switch or go with what i have.

I have the TBS Crossfire Micro TX which is also 250mW and is supposed to be good for 40km. If you're doing less than 10km then it is easily up to the job and you will lose VTX signal before you lose your RC link. You can run any of the Crossfire modules on the QX7 without doing the inversion mod. You just need to lower the baud rate. There are members on here who are doing that and they say they don't really notice the slightly lower latency by not having done the hardware mod.

If you want to know JB's views on whether you should get Crossfire, this is an excerpt from his live stream earlier on today...

Get crossfire. My best FPV gear buy 100%. Never worry about my rc link anymore. I don't do long range but I've never had a failsafe and the support is decent, at least lots better then Frsky. I have the micro TX btw, as I said I don't do long range stuff but I've had no troubles getting around 1km out behind trees and stuff. My video breaks up far before my RC link would anyway.

Only drawback for me is the receivers are rather expensive.

I have both ! I have a QX7 with R9 and several R9mini and slim on FCC firmware , works pretty good for me never had a fail safe , over 2km not pushing it (500mw) but I just got another QX7 with mod and Crossfire lite just testing this system , so far so good , the whole firmware, binding, updating is 10X easyer on TBS it just all works well , I believe the LQ (link quality) they use I believe is superior to RSSI it's more of a 2 way parameter , I'm about to convert my bigger rig FR7 to crossfire and test that some more ...
