Taycan 3.1 Elevation Issues
#1
I've been trying to get my new Taycan 3.1 dialed in, it handles great except for the elevation controls. I've tried changing the global motor speed because at 100% its just too touchy for my skill level(I've been flying GPS drones for 5 years, this is my first freestyle drone). The slightest touch sends it 200' in the air. I dialed back to 60% and now its prone to just falling to the ground. Again, we're just talking about the elevation being too touchy. Aileron, rudder and throttle are spot on at 100% and sluggy (but flyable) at 60%. Should I be looking at setting an expo curve for elevation? I don't mind figuring this out on my own, I'd just prefer to crash as little as possible during this process.

That is a 6s quad, yes? If so, you could put a 4s battery on it for now to tame it down a bit while you learn.

When you say elevation, you are referring to the throttle, correct? It sounds like you’re coming from an rc plane background based on your terminology? In a quad, we’ve got throttle, roll, pitch, and yaw- throttle controls elevation (or height). Roll is equivalent to the movement of ailerons. Pitch is equivalent to the elevator, and yaw is equivalent to the rudder.

Another option is setting your throttle mid and adding expo:
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

Try using throttle scaling as well. That made the throttle less twitchy on my Beta85.

Try setting the motors to 80% power and scale the throttle to 90%. That gave me better stick resolution and made the throttle more linear. before, it was probably like yours, at 20% stick it was going into orbit at serious speed.

So in PID tuning set: Motor Output Limit to 80

Then in the CLI, run the following.

Code:
Set throttle_limit_type = scale
Set throttle_limit_percent = 90
Save

Then test it. If it's not enough, you could try changing throttle_limit_percent to something less. 70 or 80 maybe.

After that, if you have a spare POT on your radio, you could setup up some throttle limiting on the radio.

I actually use all of these on my quad, because it's a little demon on default settings.

Good stuff guys, thanks. You confirmed that I'm on the right path here. Went to an empty field last night and tried 80% motor speed, much better than either 60% or 100%. I need to start bringing a laptop w/ me so I can calibrate on the spot. The 4s battery is a great idea, so is expo. If I can't get what I want from scaling throttle speed I'll try those other two options.
