Starting long/mid range
#1
Hey !

It's been around 4 month since I haven't been into FPV too much, juste couples of sessions in the past weeks, and that's all. So I'm a little bit rusty in term of knowledge, and I'm coming here to get my head refreshed ! I really want to go back into FPV, and go long/mid-range (for cinematic purpose).

I currently own a KOPIS 2 SE (this one), and wanted to be sure I don't forget anything before starting the mid-range life, and if I could go mid/long range with this drone ?

First in term of radio range, I guess I will need to upgrade my QX7 ? I was thinking of getting myself a tango 2 because it has a crossfire included (for economic and tiny size purpose). Do I need to change my RX on the quad ? The Kopis 2 SE comes with a R-XSR. I don't think so ... but I'm not sure anymore, and did not find it clear on internet ...

Second in term of video range, the Kopis comes with VTX Atlatl HV V2, does this is enough ?
I suppose I will need a good pair of goggles with at least a diversity module and two type of antennas ?

Probably my motors/propellers will need some adjustment too ... not really sure of at first it is really needed.

And that's all, I'm good to go ? Nothing else I need to be aware ?

Then ... after all .... maybe there are better solution with a new drone ...(I have in the back of my head, to go full in with the DJI system, but I'm currently not using it enough to justify this huge investment probably ... not sure if in term of video/cinematic, this a real game changer ....).

Thanks for your time  Smile

The VTX Atlatl HV V2 goes up to 800mW from the spec sheet so you should be good on the video side.
I'm sorry but you'll have to replace your RX with a Crossfire RX since you are now moving from the 2.4Ghz to 900mhz.
Props you can change or not, depends on what you want to do. If you want more docile flights that can extend a bit more you can change the props for lower pitch one, but that's only up to you and the type of range you want to cover.

Dunno what antenna you have on your vtx, might be worth getting a longer one to stick out from the quad more (i'm new to long range too, hoping someone will correct me if this suggestion is just wrong)

You do want an antenna that will reach over your battery so when you turn around you still get a good signal to your goggles on your way home. A good pair of goggles and module are recommended as well. These don't come cheap but if you buy the right one it will last you a long time. Not sure how far you plan on flying out but you will also need to think about batteries. You need a battery that is going to last and go the distance of your planned flight. I would recommend flying around fairly close to see what kind of flight times you get. I also think you should go with a crossfire tx module instead of the tango. Wit the Tango you are limited to 250mw power. With the long range module you can get up to 2W power. It is my understanding that you can use the module up to 250mw without having to modify your QX7. if you want any more power than that you will have to modify it. The modification isn't that difficult and you can get the board from any FPV supplier. A GPS module is also key to having good mid to long range flights.  I am not an expert by any means but I have been dabbing in mid/long range and these are some of the things I have learned. I am sure more people will chime in to help.  Hope this helps you on your journey.

Thank you all for your answers ! I will then whange my RX to a crossfire one and my antenna.

@wllmlutz you're saying that I will not be able to do some long/mid range fpv with the tango2 ? (because of the 250mw limitation ?)

The GPS is on my watchlist to ! Thanks !

You can get good range with 250mw if you fly in perfect conditions. Odds are you will be like the rest of us who usually fly in fairly noisy conditions which can cause issues with link quality. I like to be safe and have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it. How far fo you plan to fly?

Hahaha I know what you mean, and that's why I'm here asking help !
How far .. I really don't know exactly but if I may show you some videos that "I'm aiming for", both of them seems to use the tango2.
 (start at 1min23)
(start at 1min46)

I will mostly film in mountains and ocean !

Thanks for you help !

Cool videos. this is the kind of flying i plan on doing as well if i can get out to these types of places. I can see not having any problems flying in these types of mountain ranges. Going to have little to no interferance there. there is a mod you can do to the tango 2 to get 500mw but it is not for beginners. There are videos describing how to do it.

Those videos were the type of videos that caught me into fpv. I remember watching building dives from TBS at Dubai and also beautiful videos cruising montains and water. I'm 2 years now into fpv with modest time flying, I recently switched to crossfire tx and rush tank vtx to give me more confidence but long story short I still can't risk my quad. I really want to get in one of those flights, my gear seems reliable but I can't think of letting my quad behind Big Grin I recently did some montain flying max range at 600 meters, but if the quad died middle flight I would get it, no problem. Put some GPS, it will help you find it.

Are you happy to loose your quad? If not you need to up the game.

I have the Crossfire Lite Module in a Taranis X9D plus and run at 2watts if flying anywhere its going to be a hassle to get it back. I have had failsafes at lower power so now don't stuff around.

VTX have tried a few and nothing comes close to the TBS Unify Pro32 HV. It runs at 1watt so is as good as it gets at 5.8ghz.

Good aerials make a huge difference. Lots of good ones about. I use the TrueRC long on the quad and goggles plus a good patch.

GPS and a loud buzzer with its own battery is also important.

Have fun with your long range journey. It is freaky when you can no longer hear your quad. You can get a mic but I have yet to do this Smile

It's freaky also when you can still hear your quad but the sound comes with a huge delay Big Grin That still messes with me!
