Smoke stopper effectiveness
#1
Just curious as to what item of equipment will more efficiently work, I understand that they will all work but which is better...
1. Auto bulb
2. Electronic Smoke Stopper (online sales)
3. Bench power Supply with adjustable voltage & current.
I have made and/or purchased all three..
What is safer?
I HATE FRSKY!!!

In order:

- Bench supply (as long as you've set your limits sensibly!)
- Bulb
- Solid state

There's been a lot of reports of those solid state ones not tripping quickly enough to save your components. The exception seems to be the Vifly Short Saver, which gets a lot of good write-ups.

The ground is for dead people.

Ok, thanx.
The solid state is a no name brand so I'll get rid of it...
Do you know what settings to use for a P.S.?

For what it's worth, I bought the Vifly Short Save 2 after seeing Joshua Bardwell's recommendation. I've used it several times and it seems to work. What I mean by that is that I haven't had a wiring fault so I haven't actually caught a problem. But it has given me peace of mind and it's very handy as there's an on/off switch which helps for binding.

Do you have current sensing on your quad? If so I'd plug a battery in (props off, of course!), make a note of the current draw, add a little bit and use that as your max.

For reference, my 4S quad draws 0.4A with motors stopped (so, FC, ESCs, RX, cam and VTX).

So in your case it would be set for 0.5A ??

Maybe start at 0.6A and bump it up a bit if things are getting starved. You'll have to go a bit higher to test motors.

You've got me wondering if I should get one myself, now ;-)

Don't beat yourself up! This hobby has more of a learning cliff than a learning curve.
