My first build was a 5", but learned to fly a 2"...Lizard95. Had a lot of fun flying Whoops as well, but really figured out how these things work with the Lizard. All of this before ever even considering a simulator...while the simulator will help you learn, flying is what you are wanting to do and there is no substitute for the real thing.
2" or 3" quads will not even register to most onlookers. They will dismiss it as a toy without too much thought, regardless of how fast or nimble it is. You will be able to practice in even small parks as you increase your skills and build muscle memory through the stick time. That will translate to any craft you fly in the future. They are less expensive to build or buy and if you go with a quality aircraft, they can take a lot of crashes as more "tumbles" than anything.
