RSSI values with Crsossfire Tracer Taranis X9D+
#1
What RSSI values should I see with Crsossfire Tracer and a Taranis X9D+?   For example in the pits about a foot away I get 90, 3 feet away drops into the 70's and clear line of site 400 yards out in an open field I am in the low 40's and into 30's. I have 1 antenna mounted vertical and 1 mounted horizontal on the left rear arm.

This is my first Crossfire setup so I am seeing how far out I should be able to get to before a failsafe.

Thanks

It is recommended that you use LQ instead of RSSI with Crossfire protocol. Just turn it on in the OSD instead. You will see 2 number displayed with a colon in between. The first number, the mode. The second number the quality in that mode. If you see 2 as you first number, don't worry. If you see 1 as the first number and the second number drops below 70, you should think about turning back.

I was in a hurry to try the quad out and just used some electrical tape to get in the air.

What is the preferred mount orientations to get the best range?  I can design and 3d print something if needed.

A vertical mounting would give you the best reception. But that isn't always easy doable or desire on a short/mid range flight. If you plan to race or freestyle flights, then a horizontal mounting like you have there is good. You can design a mount as you mentioned. Vertical mounting do not withstand crashes very well.
