Nasty Bug in DJI FPV Goggles V2
#1
EDIT #1 (3rd June 2021): A fix for this issue will be coming soon. See post #11 and  post #12 in this thread for details.

EDIT #2 (15th June 2021): A fix for this issue has now been released. Details are in another thread HERE

EDIT #3 (12th July 2021): The "fix" mentioned in EDIT #2 has introduced another even worse bug which causes the video feed to freeze/black out, or the goggles to reboot mid flight. See the warning at the top of that other thread HERE.

EDIT #4 (15th July 2021): DJI have today released another updated firmware version (v01.02.0001) for the DJI FPV Goggles V2 that supposedly fixes the issue with the goggles going to a black screen or rebooting mid flight. See HERE in this thread for details.

This issue first seems to have started surfacing a few weeks ago and was also reported on JB's live stream a last week, but there seem to be more and more users coming forward with having experienced the same issue.

DO NOT let the battery run low on the DJI FPV Goggles V2 unless you want to risk locking yourself out of using them.

The issue is that if the voltage runs low on the DJI FPV Goggles V2 goggles and the goggles shut off, this can cause them to revert to DJI FPV Drone mode with the option to switch to standalone FPV mode for Air Units and Vistas then completely missing from the menu. So you are then stuck in DJI FPV Drone mode with no ability to switch back to standalone FPV mode, unless you also happen to own the $1300 DJU FPV Drone. Rather than fixing the issue, DJI's response to this is for customers to send their V2 goggles back to a DJI Repair Centre to have DJI engineers switch the mode back to standalone FPV mode. But then there is no guarantee that it won't happen again requiring the goggles to be returned to DJI every time that happens.

Ian of Mad's Tech has been able to repeatedly reproduce the issue and has put the following post on RC Groups (HERE)...

Mads Tech Wrote:Boom I have replicated the reset (many many times now)

Man the low power behaviour on these goggles is horrible.

Mine do reset back to FPV but I still have the option but that’s never been an issue for me as it’s been connected to an FPV Drone.

The issue will be users who never have had the drone and won’t have an way back.

This issue is going to be one that happens more than anything with users using a standard lipo or their have loose barrel connector.

When the battery gets down to 5.15 or so V the goggles enter horrible reset cycle where they keep going around and around. You will see the DJI logo some times, lines, colours, broken screen and all sorts. Then on reboot with proper power the goggles reboot to FPV Drone mode 3 out of 4 times I’m my tests.

Part of the issue driving this is at 5.2v the goggles are drawing about 50% more current than at 8v so that’s killing your LiPo harder.

Basically the same scenario that some users face when first getting the goggles and not being able to activate them.

Ian has also released the following video detailing the issue...

This issue doesn't affect the V1 goggles. As a result of DJI's shenanigans with the V2 goggles and their apparent reluctance to fix the issues, pre-owned V1 goggles have probably now just doubled in price Whistling

You know how it goes. Once someone mentions they have a particular issue, a load of other people then seem to come out of the woodwork and say they have experienced the same problem and suddenly realise it is related to the same root cause. Maybe it's been an ongoing issue for a while in isolation with people just thinking there was a fault with their particular goggles, or it was just something to do with the known V2 goggles activation problem.

DJI really seems to be disconnecting from the FPV pilots.
In some extent I'm happy I didn't try the HD FPV system or I would get mixed feelings in getting into it.
Let's hope DJI clears all the doubts for everyone that want to be part of HD FPV.

Yes, that is a really great response from a multi billion dollar company Rolleyes

"Please don't multiple turns on/off the goggles when the seriously low battery".

Well, the goggles turn themselves off with a low battery and seem to keep power cycling themselves, so you don't really get much choice. Instead of useless suggestions like this, how about DJI get off their backside and fix both this issue and the activation issue that has existed for 4 months now with no sign that anyone at DJI is bothered about actually providing a real solution to their customers who each paid $570 for a pair of the goggles.

A friend of mine had this issue a month or two ago - sent the goggles in to DJI for repair and got them back with no fix. He had to find someone who had the DJI FPV drone in order to get it to work with his own quad again.

So don't run a 2S pack down to a level that would otherwise destroy it, check.

Hobbies are a weird thing, retail customers are often beta testers this isn't only unique to FPV. Hobbies are full of risk and in some cases are inherently unsafe to yourself and others but mostly to your wallet if you are careless with your gear. Not making excuses for DJI but these same issues happen with other hobbies.

Otherwise on the goggles front I see bitching about Skyzone, FatShark and Orqa so it's not like there is a bullet proof solution. I enjoyed using the Skyzone 04x goggles and they fit much better but the experience in HD doesn't compare.

Wonder if a chip shortage is the reason behind the different versions, or bad redesign. Something they can't just throw a firmware update at to fix.

I tested how voltage input affects the DJI goggles (V1): https://oscarliang.com/dji-fpv-system-fa...ji-goggles
And I found that when voltage drops below 5.8V it starts to affect your signal strength (bitrate dropping).
DJI should really fix their problems but the users maybe shouldn't run their battery that low anyway in the first place Big Grin
4S battery for the win!

An update:

Quote:Mad's TechUpdate On The DJI FPV Google’s V2 Issues

Two days ago I made a video where I state due to the issues with the V2 goggles switching modes and users being stuck in the FPV Drone Mode my personal recommendation is not buy the V2 Goggles because of this issue right now.

The video has attracted over 7,000 views and 200 comments in 2 days and I want to thank everyone for their feedback, while some seem to have missed the issue at hand there has been an amazing response overall so thanks to everyone.

Today I was contacted regarding this and we discussed this issue thats affecting users. While I can’t go into any details right now I can say I am pleased to see some action being taken to address this and I am hoping to be able to share some more concrete information on a fix for the FPV Goggles V2 in the near future.

The Purpose of the video was to share an issue I felt made the product un recommendable from my point of view as someone. This seems to have been noticed by the right people at the manufacture and I’m hoping we can get back to being able to recommend the system system again in the near future.

I will share more when I can.

Mad.

Below is the update from Ian that he posted a few days ago on his channel. Long story short, DJI will (finally) be be providing a firmware fix in the next couple of weeks to fix the issue which Ian has been testing and has confirmed that it solves the issue, thus making the V2 goggles usable again with the confidence that you won't randomly get stuck in limbo again.
