Motor selection for a 7inch - Medium range mountain surfer
#16
Took my 9" Avenger2812 for spin today - zappy sparky zap zap mid air - propellers chewed up balance cable I forgot to secure. Landed/Crashed and holly shit sparks everywhere!!

Anyway..

7" weight compared to 5" - everything else like FC/vtx/camera is basically identical.
1. 7" Props are 9g-10g.. vs 3g-5g
2. Heavier 50g 2806.5 motors vs 30g 2306 typical 5"
3. Longer frame arms. DO NOT use 4mm arms. 6mm minimum. Frame is typically +40g heavier.

Dry weight, you are looking at ~35g extra per arm. (For digital add 30g).
That is +140g overall.
Freestyle 5" without GoPro = 300g
Freestyle 7" without GoPro = 440g.

1. As I stated before, ALWAYS build 6S. There is no good reason not too. If there was, we would be still using 1S.
2. The bigger the prop/size, the more it can carry easily. Recall 7" props are double area of 5". 400g battery sounds like a lot, but not on 7".
3. Pancake 2806.5 motor is not necessarily more efficient. Meant to be used with light prop.
My 7" eats amps like crazy. 7" doesn't guarantee long flight times. Mine flies shorter than 5".. but much faster. This is mostly prop choice.

I finally selected the emax Eco II 2807 1300kv. Let's see how it goes:

My Build:
- RDQ Source One V3 7" Long Range Frame - 6mm V0.2 DeadCat Arms
- Emax Eco II 2807 1300kv
- Diatone Mamba F405 mk2
- Diatone Mamba F50 ESC
- Flywoo BQnano (Barometer + magnetometer combo)
- Foxeer Predator V4
- Rush Tank Solo
- Flywoo Atomic Antenna 150mm
- Beitan BN-220 GPS
- VIFLY FINDER 2 BUZZER
- TBS Crossfire Nano RX
- DAL Foldable F7 7051 Tri-Blade 7"

This will be an INAV build

I hope to use it with 5S2P LiON pack for long range or 6s 3300 ma/h Lipo.

I later discovered the FR7 MR/LR Frame and i got hook with it's looks. I found a remix of the TPU parts to build something similar for the RDQ Source One: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4635311

Perhaps it's time to start a build series in the forum, but It will be 6weeks to start getting the parts.

i would suggest to mount the tpu arm guards the other side of the arm. even better save that grams for flighttime :-)
that gopro mount might give nice focus :-)

the foldable triblades wont give best flighttime, i would choose or give them a try additional on unfoldable biblades :-)
parts list and battery plans sounds good to me :-)

Yeah i agree, i didnt install the arm guards on my FR7 atleast. Feels like they would be mostly dead weight for a cruiser.
Also i would hesitate using foldies, i dont know. It feels like they are less reliable solid props? Mayby i am wrong. For me more parts equal more thing that can go wrong.
Biblade sure sounds interesting, from what i have seen APC seems popular?
Solid triblades props take up more space for sure but i solved it using a 60L rain cover on my torvol bag. I guess it depends where the quad needs to fit.

Got this video in my feed today. I would not risk flying mountain with foldies i think.. Mayby V2 is alot better but still feels a bit risky.

rotor balance cant be proofed or corrected on foldable rotors, on 7inch that might be important for efficiency...

i may suprise many of you
but i would recomand as i own 2810 1500kv motors Wink
with 500g  6s 4500mah battery
it is killer when you want
but when you want mountains and will be not very hard on sticks
you can do 13-15km with 70-100km/h avg speed

Thanks! I'm only printing some feets for the quad. I also do not see the point in too much protection, for a basher I got my banggod 5inch.

As  hugnosed_bat and Myman suggested I will be testing some non-foldable biblades and triblades.
I can source locally: HQ DURABLE PROP 7X4.5 Biblades and HQ DURABLE PROP 7X4X3 triblades.

Anyways,  Myman photos make me think that the foldables may be a good idea, the quad seems huge! I think that this thing will scare me as I was 6 months ago with the 5inch, but It will fun!

Props are important!

On 3" you have crazy 50k+ rpm. On 5" there are dozen excellent models, and so many reviews.
On 7", unbalanced, bent, or just bad design - its magnified!

If its not flying right. If you are getting JELLO. Even with fresh props. Dont be afraid to buy 3 or even 4 different sets.
I probably tried like 10 sets. Oldschool 7045, DALProp floppy proppy. HQ 7040*3, 7035*3.. ended up with good old Flash 7042

A lot of peeps are using a 28xx motor and like them.

Just don't go much below 25xx

I run this same setup with gemfan flash 7040 and love it. I cruise long range ona self made lithium pack 3000kv 6s for 25 mins
