LR DJI Range Testing Advice/Suggestions
#1
V-22's LR Digital Build (3" 250g 10km DJI Digital Build | IntoFPV Forum) inspired me to start working on a couple smaller builds with the intent of trying to see how far I can push my DJI system.  So about a week ago I tried flying one of my 5" quads out to about a mile from me...maybe even a bit less.  Unfortunately I lost video feed and dropped the quad on a trail not horribly far from where my wife was walking with our dogs.  I posted about it here: Range Questions...DJI System | IntoFPV Forum.  Other than using the 1200mW hack my entire system was stock DJI.  Since then I've added the Iflight Crystal antennas to my goggles.

I was thinking I'd likely add crossfire eventually but before I go that direction I thought it would be fun to see just how far I can push the DJI system.  But honestly I've only been flying about 6 months and I have zero experience with anything analog other than a Tinyhawk indoors.  So I'm really interested in hearing thoughts and opinions on the best way to range test the DJI system.  Since a person basically loses both video and control at the same time, it's not like I can continue to fly blindly in hopes of getting video back.  I know we have GPS Rescue but that doesn't seem like the best thing to rely on when it comes to saving my quad from disaster.

So please, I'd love to hear thoughts on the best way(s) to range test and in the meantime I'm going to see what I can dig up on the internet.

Thanks!

You're definitely going to want to have GPS rescue setup and tested, and maybe even switch to iNav. I know the video link sometimes takes quite a while to reconnect (especially on 50Mbps), but I don't use the DJI controller so I don't know whether the RC link is affected in the same way. If you're going to be pushing the limits of range a reliable and tested failsafe is an absolute must.

BF GPS rescue is highly flawed, Kaity can attest to it.  It is better than nothing but not much.

A good system to find a downed quad is better money spent.  I use a Marco Polo.  It has a 2 mile range, and if you are paying attention, even if you are 5 miles out, you should be able to get within 2 miles of the downed quad.

If you want a inflight rescue system iNav's system is vastly superior to GPS rescue.
