Lighter 3s vs heavier 4s
#1
Hi folks,

I'm realizing I need to upgrade my batteries, and I'm not sure how the efficiency works here.

I've got a 3inch that's about 110g dry.

I'm looking at 2 options for batteries:

3s 720mah 100c at 53g
4s 720mah 100c at 71g

Running 1304 5200kv motors that I estimate have a max draw of 65A, and both batteries have a max output of about 72A.

Is the power of 4s likely to be better than a 10% AUW reduction?

Hopefully not missing any critical info ?.

Thanks!

Honestly, I'd say to go for 3S on that config. Your weight is nice and low, and the motors would probably fry at 4S. I do 4S on 3600kv at 280g and it's got plenty of zip.

This is the 4s version, too, lol. I blew up my old mini stack with 13a escs.

Kind of leaning toward 3s, but my gut feels like I'm missing out on power.

I do have 3s and 4s batteries now, but all of them sag really hard. Especially my 4s 525mah 80c batteries. Bought them before I understood some of this stuff.

Finally getting back into the hobby after a couple years!

Edit: Of course, I didn't realize the 3s batteries I liked are out of stock. Next best 3s is only 60A draw. Trying to stick with RDQ because I have some other stuff I'm buying.

RDQ carries Tattu, CNHL, and GNB packs. Have heard decent stuff about all of those. Wouldn't worry about the amp draw either. Most of the C ratings are lies anyway. As for giving up power, you're gonna see all kinds of punch, so don't worry bout it. If my chunky 3 inch quad can do 80MPH and pull out of a 100 foot dive in a mere 5 feet, you're not going to see any issue at nearly half the weight. In fact, it'll probably outperform it.

Alright, you convinced me.

I know they're lies, but it's all I got!

I think I'll go with the 3s 660mah 90c, 51g. Bit disappointed that the 720mah isn't available, though! Same price, but all the specs are slightly better.

I appreciate the input.

go with a quality pack like tattu and gnb.

5200kv is typical for 3s, realy high for 4s, to high for my experience either

Ended up putting my email in to get a notification on a 720mah 3s that was out of stock. Got a notification one hour later that it was in, lol.

Appreciate the input on sticking with 3s from you both.

Went and flew my 4s 525mah packs again today in the yard. It's a squirrelly son of a b. Can barely keep on near the ground. Takes off like crazy at like 25% throttle. I think 3s was the right call, lol.

You'll get used to the throttle in time. When i first started out with 3S I couldn't land it at all. i would touch the throttle and be 18ft in the air. Now after flying 3S for a while I can land and hover close to the ground without issue. It just takes time to get used to it. I fly a 1202.5 on 3S and it's nippy enough for me. But looking to get a 1303.5 5500kv to sample some 4S madness in a couple of months (but will primarily fly 3S on it).

But sometimes you just want to fly like the wind and go as fast as possible. So for you, on that craft, that is 4S. Mine will fly well on 2S 660 packs, but 3S 450-550 packs give more beans and make it ascend at crazy speeds.

Enjoy the power. Smile
