I am very new to this hobby. I want to purchase a FETtec g4 n v1.7 to build a quad, however, I don’t have a transmitter that uses one of the accepted receiver protocols that’s listed on the flight controllers website. Am I still able to use a Spektrum receiver with this particular controller, or do I need to purchase a new transmitter? I’m not sure if it’s possible to modify my Spektrum NX6 to use something like Crossfire because there isn’t a module bay.

Honestly, a betaflight flight controller will work very well and will probably be easier and definitely cheaper than a new radio/receiver combo. I don't think KISS supports spektrum at all, and i cant say if the receiver can be modified but probably not.

edit: also, if you arent using a digital FPV system, you don't want the N version of that KISS FC. it is digital only as it has no OSD chip.

Not to mention the availability of the non digital version seems to be quite limited currently.

I think for KISS you basically go with Crossfire, Tracer or one of the FrSky derivatives.  ELRS does work, but it seems to be non trivial to set up.

I don't have one, but it is also another area I have been researching as I am kind of tempted by the 15A AIO that FETtec sell.  I've seen some posts saying ELRS is possible.  I have seen (I think) a couple of Spektrum threads on Reddit or maybe somewhere else (google it) and I don't think anyone got it to work. 

The manual is pretty much useless beyond the barebone basics.

I would second Matt0725's suggestion and say go with Betaflight, if you want to use Spektrum.  At least for your first build.  If not you are probably opening up a massive world of pain and irksomeness, of which you might spend weeks or months trying to make it work and never succeed.  That is unless you can find someone who has done it successfully. If someone can give a set of instructions on how to do it, then maybe go for it.


Alternatively (if you are really wanting to go down this route), you could try ELRS (cheaper option) and get say a TX12 ELRS or Jumper T-Lite 2 ELRS and any ELRS RX that is not a HM EP1/2.  Or (more expensive option) purchase a Tango 2 radio and an RX module and go with Crossfire, or (similar price) get a Mambo and RX module.

Personally i would go Betaflight first, learn as much as possible, then start dipping your toes into the more advanced stuff.

Ahhh yeah, def stick with the beta flight. It’s still going to be a huge learning curve but eventually it will most likely fly. There is not a ton of support for kiss that I’ve seen on here anyways. Good luck and happy flying!

If I wanted to start learning about pid tuning with betaflight using my current transmitter and a dsmx receiver do I need to look for a specific f4 flight controller or can I solder the receiver module onto any h7 flight controller? Seeing that the g4 doesn’t say anything about spektrum’s Rx scared me.

Any flight controller. To learn about pid tuning, watch YT, posts questions on here and hit the Pid Tuning tab in betaflight.

You might want to go somewhere and take a laptop with Betaflight on it so you can tune while out flying, unless you have one of those FC's that you can tune from the Speedybee app.

But any F411, F405, H7 or F7 flight controller will do. If it runs BF, you can tune it. Obviously some FC come with more UARTs so you can add more peripherals like GPS and other sensors to your quad. So getting an F405, F7 or H7 is advisable if you are looking to build something with that type of functionality.
