Is anyone on the forum doing ground based FPV stuff?
#1
I have gotten bored with flying, having done most of what I set out to do.

I saw some vids on another page of guys racing cars/trucks with FPV and it got the juices flowing again.

It looks like this section of the forum is pretty dead.  Curious if some of you are doing ground FPV.

There is quite a bit of RC track racing in the area  but it looks like FPV isn't a thing here yet.  So I was hoping to get info and ideas from thithis group as we all know you are the best guys and gals.??

I was on the Arrma forum at the beginning of last year when I was messing around with some of their basher models. Damn is that forum active compared to most forums. But every time this topic came up the only people that responded that have done it all pretty much abandon it or were selling the rig they made for it.

I recall one guy had a crawler or some other small truck that he had the cam mounted to a servo motor and used the head tracking feature in the googles so he could look to the left or right as needed.

Saw several people stating they would start a build with DJI but never finish it, some were high speed run cars like the Arrma Limitless. Which seems like a decent idea since you're really only running it in a straight line and likely doing it on a completely flat road that needs to have a long runway. Though the crawler sounds good too since they're so slow and it's all about navigating over obstacles.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm mostly interested in racing, and I can see where head tracking would be of advantage for sure.

What I have seen is most run a DJI HD system if the do FPV.  I wonder if an analog system would be fine for racing?

The crawler was analog but the feed was horrible. It's been a while since I saw the video but pretty sure it seemed like he had a good bit of interference from the vehicle.

after flight in the parkhouse in the night, we switched to rc cars about noise.

fpv feed does limit on ground vehicles, you cant go as fast as line of sight.

parkhouse and ground vehicules give benefits on digital transmission, penetration in ph is great.
in the parkhouse the with limited ability to speed up, digital is ahead.
aslong as there is a thight track, digital works better because of the low distance between antenna and ground in general, analog works great either.
as a longrange pilot, the interferences from analog might feel comfortable :-)

for high speeds or wide tracks, analog and digital isnt good enough. groundforces doesnt allow latency at all, there is much less controllability than on a quad. the importance for suspensionwork increases alot for drive with videofeed.

resolution and signal penetration would be my reason for digital transmission. as a analog pilot i dont feel true downsides, low resolution and a bit of interferences doesnt bother me

i have a buddy use headtracking. overall the best cam position we got was the rear spoiler. the wide fov doesnt give a need to turn for watch in or out of a corner. not needed to get fast.

my experience is; on common los racetracks you wont be even half as fast as the los pilots. there is no chance to beet human eye with fpv feed between somewhere Undecided but its huge fun anyway :-)
what kind of track and car would you like to drive? would you like to drive against los pilots?

An FPV hovercraft could be cool. Personally i would like an FPV tank, maybe 1/3 - 1/4 size of a real one, with a proper diesel engine on it. But it's pipedream level. Maybe one day.

Thanks Huggy, that is the kind of info I was looking for.  Sounds like you have this wired down pretty tight.

As far as what equipment, I don't know yet.  Pretty sure I want to go electric, but even that isn't completely settled in my head.  If you have recommendations, both for a beginner and what would be a good setup once a person knows what they are doing, I would like to hear it.  I would be looking at rigs for off-road racing, even though I would prefer pavement racing with like scale F1 cars.  But off-road is what is around where I live.

Since there is no one I have found driving FPV in the greater Las Vegas area, I would be driving against LOS racers.  Unless, I could cause a ground swell for that kind of racing.  Based on what you say about FPV vs LOS, everyone needs to be doing the same to be fair.

our best results in parkhous - a bit slippery ground - was on short coirse trucks. 1/8 models with low center of gravity and huge street tires was always not forgiving enough to handle them and get benefits. 1/10 shortcourse was the best.

my personal best results, was on the losi micro rally 1/24 on wooden floor. it has a nice suspension, got that nice fpv feeling from the good handling. drifting in controll unyer de bed :-) i need one again :-)

i havent enough offroad experience, but depending on the offroad track - i would choose something like a losi five or another 1/5 model. i beleive their suspension size would give a nice handling for fpv.

f1 scale :-) that sounds like a 1/5 modle on a gokart track to me :-)

The video confirms for me that FPV ground has to be more fun than LOS ground.....just like air.

Thanks for the help, Huggy!  I may be hitting you up in the future if I decide to do this.  Big Grin

mention it again, a stearingwheel with forcefeedback by gyro and accelerometer data would bring a great thing :-)

I have a couple of Tamiya Blackfoot Extreme truggies modded to FPV.

I have three of the small EMax 1S buggies (FPV)

And I have 35  (yes, thirty five) plus at least 20 more member owned ones in a club group of schoolboys and a separate group of adults doing Tiny Whoovers (Whoov) based from brushed 65 quads with micro FPV.  (Electronic timing via iRace)

EDIT............

Forgot I have three micro RC motorbikes, and have tried FPV micro attached to the riders back!

Wonder what people will do when the gov says you need Remote-Id on your FPV cars and a network killswitch. Tongue
