IRC Tramp Troubles
#1
Question
Hello,
I got into FPV a bit ago and have been flying analog. My VTX is the GEPRC RAD 1W on the Cinebot 30. My goggles are the EV800D with stock antennas. I don't expect phenomenal range with this set up, but my last couple flights have had really poor range, approximately 100-200 ft. I've had better range in the past, so I'm not sure what has changed. I looked around the internet and heard changing power output or channel could solve the problem. I am thinking it is possible my Vtx is set to an output of 25mW, and is causing poor range. I tried upping the power output through betaflight, but I struggled to get Tramp to work. I had my quad plugged in to my computer as well as my battery plugged in. My Vtx was powered up, but the Device Ready option in the Video Transmitter Tab read "No." I watched a JB video and was told that had to say "Yes" in order for it to communicate with the Vtx. I confirmed everything was wired up to the correct port, and cannot understand why I am having troubles. I then tried changing output and frequency through my OSD in my goggles, however when I save the settings and return to the menu, the power seems to be return back to 25mW.

I will try to attach any pertinent photos and screenshots, but I am new to the forum, so if there is anything else that would be helpful to see/know I'd be more than happy to provide it.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Did you tell Betaflight the VTX is connected to whichever UART or Soft Serial you are using?

I assume Tramp works the same as Smartaudio (I don't have anything that uses Tramp). So connect VTX to a soft serial or uart, set it up in Ports in Betaflight, setup anything vtx specific like low power on disarm and default power level.

If all else fails there is usually a way to do it from the vtx by pushing in buttons. Consult the manual for the vtx for how to do it manually.

Thanks for the response, I'm not sure if the files I tried to attach are visible. I have it connected to UART 1, and that is in my ports tab in betalight as well. I did try using the button on the Vtx, but It's  hard to say if it actually worked. The range didn't improve much.

Other possibilities that might affect range.

Broken antenna.
Non-matching polarisation of antennas.
Broken VTX.

Normally if I have an issue like this I would check/replace the wire going to the UART. If you have everything setup correctly in BF and it still doesn't work then it is likely the wire. Next step, swap the UART and retry. Finally, swap the VTX and retry.

A while back I had a similar issue and in the end it turned out the VTX was broken (in some way after a crash). I had bad video at 50m out and Smartaudio wasn't working correctly. I swapped the VTX and the problems disappeared. It's just a matter of troubleshooting it. Anything you can think that can affect transmission has to be eliminated. So start with basic stuff like swapping antennas and checking wiring, then progress down the checklist until you find the problem.
