Impulse RC Apex 5" Build Log
#1
Bought a new camera for the Tyro 109 but the lens didn't fit through the front of the quad so decided to go a full sized Freestyle Quad frame and swap over the parts. A bit of a sad day but also exciting Smile

Parts:

Impulse RC Apex 5" Frame                                $139.00
T-Motor F55a Pro II ESC                                    $139.95
TBS Ethix Mr Steele Silk 2306 2345KV Motor V3   $179.80
Diatone MAMBA F722S FC-MB-F722S                  $65.95
TBS Unify Pro32 HV (MMCX)                              $89.90
TrueRC OCP Long Antenna                                $21.95
Foxeer Falkor 2                                                $57.95
TBS Crossfire Nano RX                                      $42.90
Immortal T                                                      $10.90
Some dodgy Buzzer                                          $20.00
TBS M8 GPS Glonass                                        $16.95
Props Gemfan Hulkie 5055's or 5048                  $5.00

Total Cost                                                       $790.25

I love it when you have all the bits together to get started Smile

Scary when you put a price on everything. Even more when you add up the postage to get all these bits over time.

Nice man ... great frame and awesome motors to boot. Are you building this as a long range?

Not really long range but longish say 1-3kms. I got about 7 minutes flight time on the Tyro frame and expect a bit less on this frame due to the weight. It is a fast quad so is very doable.

When I go to this site yellow is my normal flying, red is where I go occasionally but is a bit scary as no GPS, blue is one I want to do as there is a big telco tower on the top of the hill.

This is the area

Frame is complete. Still trying to find out how to mount the xt60 connector. Looks like it will only work coming out the side.

You would thing that it would have come with a plate or something which mounted properly for a xt60 connector. Cable ties will be the go for now unless I can find something cool.

I also ran into my first drama. The damn camera I bought is too big. I bought the full sized version not the mini. Not a massive issue as thankfully my local hobby shop will swap it out but I made the mistake of going cool stickers and stuck them on my tool box. So I bought the right sized camera which I will take the stickers out of so I can send the incorrect one back for a refund. Doh. Things cant always be easy right Smile

Motors and ESC on. I had to extend the capacitor out a bit as it was getting in the way of where the antenna and aerial cables are going to be ran. I am determined to have as little interference as possible. For the capacitor I extended it with 2.5mm power point wire and shortened the xt60 wires as much as I could. Had to crank the soldering iron to 480 degress and used my biggest spade tip. Still took a while to solder on though.

Don't be silly. The ImpulseRC Apex is a cheap frame so you can't expect all of those optional extras to be included. What do you want, a moon on a stick? Tongue Big Grin

On my far superior Martian II frame I have the XT60 pigtail coming out the side and I pass it through the battery strap to stop it getting into the props. Below is quite an old picture but it gives you the idea...

LOLLL!!!  I think I can relate to that emotion ... ROFL ROFL

Urban, I'm probably the worst when it comes to lipo connections cos I still have all my builds coming out the back like in the old school days.  (In my defense, I do notice folks like Vortex still build like this too.)  But for what it's worth, I just stick a cap at the lipo and I get no noise from the extended lead.  I do zip tie it to a standoff or 3d printed anchor though so it doesn't snag the stack in a big crash.

Mostly all wired up. Powered up fine and didn't go bang which was nice. I have ordered a smoke stopper but did the DMM over everything which seemed ok so did the fingers crossed start up. I must admit this was the first build I have actually cared if it exploded Smile

All that is left is the buzzer to install and to fit the new camera when it arrives in a few days.

Oh yeah I also figured out why the camera which is on it atm stopped working on the last crash. The power cable on it had a join in the middle which the solder joint failed. So there you go, I am not as reasonable as I thought I was at soldering.

Will start configuring and updating everything to the latest tomorrow if I get some time and hopefully see the GPS work. Never done anything GPS wise so looking forward to getting that knowledge and all the failsafe/rth stuff going.

Had a problem with the GPS so ordered a new one and finally got around to wiring it all up AND everything is working finally.

This bad boy is going to be a screamer. I've built it to run on 5s mwooahahaha. It's gunna hammer Smile

I'll hopefully put it all together today and the flash it to the latest betaflight and esc firmware. Just saw 4.2.2 is out so why not.

UJ, are those ethix silks? The v2 ones at 2345kv? If so I’m happy for you to have mine. I’ve only got three now and v2s seem to be hard to come by. One died on me trying to get the rooster out of a tree. Hit me up with a pm if you’re interested mate.

Couldn't fit the vtx inside which is sad. This will do for now. Just hope the vtx doesn't get too hot.

Weighs in at 398 grams without props and battery. The 5s batteries I am using are 215 grams so he is a heavy-ish dude Smile

Yep Ethix Silks but I think they are the V3's. I'll double check and if they match i'll grab them off you.

A bit of an epic journey with this quad. I didn't want to put it in the air until I had everything working correctly.

Its running 4.2.2 and has all the RPM filters and bidirectional DSHOT stuff setup. Hopefully it will run as good as my basher which I unfortunately nuked again so it is undergoing a bit of maintenance atm. Damn ghost stick causing an out of control spin into a tree caused so much damage.

Looking forward to a bit of tuning and making sure the GPS rescue works. Really looking forward to this bit. I reckon once happy with this and get it set for failsafe I will attempt a couple of my to do list flights.

A few compromises had to be made. I was set on having a top mounted battery but it just didn't work mainly as I didn't want to block any airflow to the VTX. So bottom mount it is.

The upside of that is I "had" to buy a 3D printer to make up the housing for the VTX protection and to make up a plate so the battery could be mounted underneath. I have just downloaded fusion and intend to make something like a ram air flow tunnel for the VTX but what is on it is good enough for now and will hopefully protect the VTX enough. In saying that I have built this quad as a more of an open space high speed cruiser so hopefully that will limit the head plants into damn trees.

I am so close. Just waiting for the battery pad to arrive (hopefully Wednesday). Once stuck on it is ready to rock and roll Smile

Still mucking about with the reborn Marvin. Yet to start lowering the filters. The motors are pretty much cold after a flight so a bit of work can be done there I am sure.

I have already had one approx 70kph crash as I didn't check the battery charge on my goggles and ended up having complete loss of video feed. I was heading straight at the road near the end of the paddock so had a bit of a panic and hit the disarm button. Ripped the goggles off and saw a small puff of dust on its probably 10th bounce. Also found out that PLA doesn't handle a crash at all. It just vaporises.

I have GPS rescue going and tested so am about to set it as my failsafe and go for a bit of a longer fly to really test it.

Today for your viewing pleasure is a small clip using the Gemfan Hulkie 5055 props of just hitting 160kph/100mph which was something I needed some proof of Smile. Its weird as I got to 165kph on the 5047's yesterday. I thought I would have gone faster using the 5055's. It was a bit windy though.

Unedited so switch off sound.
