Iflight Nazgul 5 prop attachment

Hi all,

From this question you'll see why I don't build my own quads, I can't even attach the props to a BNF.. On the Iflight Nazgul Evoque 5 it seems to use finger tightening securing nuts to hold the props on. However the nut doesn't screw down onto the shaft far enough and there is a space between it and the prop. In other words the prop is not secured tightly between the bell and the nut. What am I missing? There are 4 small M3 clear nuts in the box but too small for the motor shaft.

Generally the propeller nut must be tightened down with a driver so that the flange of the nut compresses the top of the propeller hub.  Almost every M5 prop nut I can think of is "self locking" in that they have a nylon band inside that acts to keep the nut from backing off under flight stresses.  Just took a look at the quad you are referring to and it looks to have typical motors.  You will need to use a 5/16" driver to tighten them down while hold the motor bell.  This will lock the propeller hub to the facing surface of the motor and the bottom of the lock nut.

Hand drivers are fine for this.

Sounds like you were shafted on the nylock m5 nuts.

Don't seem to be able to attach pictures when replying but yes it has a clear nylon band at the top of the nut and in the box I've now found what appears to be 3D printed adapter to put over the nut to make it easier to tighten the nut by hand but even so I can't do it, can't get enough torque, seems like too much force is required to me but I get you don't want the props coming off. I've had screw secured props before which does seem more of a pain but this is turning out to be worse. Thanks for the advice.

Ok I watched a setup video someone did and they hand tighten then use a driver. Hmm not sure I have that driver which will be a pain if not. Come on iflight supply the required tools!

The M5 nuts require an 8mm spanner. Just tighten them so they are hard against the hub of the prop. As long as the prop can't be moved round on the shaft of the motor then that is tight enough.

These are the two drivers I have.  They are 6-in-1 screw drivers from a local hardware store.

Not sure what the 3D printed piece is, these nylock nuts have been used for a long time without any sort of adapters required.  Some propellers have a cavity on the underside and a small nylon ring can be placed to fill in the void, but I just install the props without and have never had any issues.



Please forgive my dirty hands, grime and messy polish.  We have been tending to chores on our ranchita all morning and we still have more to do.

Hi all, sorted had to raid my automotive socket set. I used the 5/16" driver as that seemed to fit and was what was suggested earlier but it's very close to the 8mm. didn't try that as just seeing the most recent messages now. I'm now thinking as iflight use metric screws that it probably should be the 8mm.. They're certianly not coming off now, first time using these so just wanted to make sure before doing it. Yes, the nuts on motors  are metric so the actual correct spanner size for an M5 threaded nut 8mm, but if you still use the imperial system in your country then the closest fraction of an inch will be OK as long as it's not too sloppy.

I had a wrench (ratchet type) that I used for a bit with an 8mm socket...but it would allow me to over tighten the propeller nuts and so I switched to the driver style.  The only one I had was 5/16" and I found it fit almost perfectly so it has been in my field kit ever since.  The two are so close as to not make any difference.  If the prop nuts required real torque, then the correct size of 8mm would be my choice, but hand torque is plenty for this application.

You will get used to what works and it will all be second nature soon enough.
