HP DPS800gb psu
#1
Hi,

I recently modded the HP dps800gb to take some xt60s to power my chargers. However today I touched the metal casing and noticed that I got a small tingling current flowing through my fingers. I was touching another metal surface and I measured the voltage (1.2V), so nothing bad. However when I stood on a rubber surface the tingling sensation immediately stopped. Is this normal, and if not do you know what I can do?

By the way I used conformal coating to cover the terminals I soldered to.

Thanks!

The HP should be grounded. Double check that you have grounding on the case. The green wire from the AC source should be connected to the case somewhere. Do a continuity test where the green wire comes in and the case. I have a few PSU and none has cause anything close to a shock.

I found the issue after some research and practical testing. I took my charger with me on holiday somewhere else in the UK with me and remembered I had nothing like this before. As its a ground issue, I read somewhere saying it happens when you are the better ground to the device that the actual ground itself in the wall socket. So the wiring in the garage is bad and in the kitchen it's perfect and I don't have this issue. Really weird!

Here in the States, unless you live in an older house, the kitchen, bathroom and garage have to be wired with GFCI outlets. These outlets will detect that if the ground goes anywhere else, it will trip. It is quite annoyimg when you have poorly grounded equipment and the outlet will trip all the time. I assume the UK probably has similar construction codes. I would not be surprise that the kitchen is better wired.
