HDZero Freestyle VTX - No Image
#1
Separating this out in the hope of a reply that helps!

My new VTX does not produce an image, nothing, black screen, No camera image, no OSD.   Scanning with VRX finds nothing

I have checked wiring, inc tx/rx swapovers.

The unit is powered and AFAIK has the expected LEDs lit.

Betaflight setttings inc VTX Table, UART selected, etc are believed correct.

Can anyone with a working one:-

a) post a dump file here

b) post the VTX table and Betaflight settings they are using

Currently out of five HDZ VTX, four whoop lite and one Freestyle, two of the WL's have proven faulty (rainbow on the slightest hit, one from new), and this new unused Freestyle VTX appears not to work (no image).  I don't think its me, but this is a last ditch sanity check!   Thinking

I'm a day away from giving up and fitting one of my spare Vista for DJI instead of the Freestyle!   Angry

OK - SOME progress.

Remember, NO image at all to either Transporter2 HDZero screen or HDZero Goggles. Scanning constantly, nothing found.

Have seen sales page info that the camera I have fitted, the RunCam Nano 90 camera, does not work with HDZero VRX, only goggles. Fair enough, that MIGHT explain no image on Transporter2 (though not mentioned anywhere I can find!!) but not working to HD Goggles.

Eventually managed to get a different camera on the freestyle VTX lump, the one that comes with the whoop lite bundle, and instantly a signal and then seconds later an image, a pretty good one.

Back and fore fitting is consistent, def the camera is the reason.

SO, its the camera, or the camera/VTX incompatibility/settings (not that I can see how to alter it!!)

I had a delay in being able to assemble the quad, and the camera was bought end April, so no chance of warranty IF the camera is dead, but is it, or does it need some setting I'm unaware of?  £60 waste of money, or not?

I’d put the vista on and move on. That is my plan, moving away from hdz. That is way too much involvement, on your part, for a retail release of anything.

i dont own hdzero but i builded two quads - the only thing easy missed and messy - the uart settup which require a number less.

I don’t see any update after my post.

Or are you using another name? I see two bad ravens posting. You, BadRaven and Bad Raven. Weird.

OK, I'll summate here:-

1. Firmware bug on Nano 90 camera causing no image now supposedly solved by update. However, by then I'd managed to change camera.

2. I got confused with regards set up for Smart Audio, which IMO is particularly badly explained by HDZero. But also another firmware bug.

Forecast wet today so arranged delivery of various things to sort out this and other HDZ issues and then no rain till 13.30, coupled with delivery told 11.00ish not until 5.30pm ish, so could have gone and flown a.m. with arrangement I have working for now and checked a few things. So, sitting waiting..................

It's flown......................   Big Grin Rolleyes Big Grin .............. 2 packs on 4S, 6 packs on 6S...........  and its still in one piece..................   ROFL

NOW it might be worth sorting the OSD issue, its been exceptionally and inordinately hard to get the displays where I want on screen with this FC/VTX/Camera/Betaflight combination. Normally not an issue at all, and I have done it enough times you'd think, but here...................   Poop

I only really care about my battery status. Maybe when I get better I will get a better feel for battery drain, but for now I need to see my voltage to know when to land.

Other stuff is nice, but like a car and the gas needle, I need to know how much is left in the tank.

In addition to battery mAh usage and voltage level, RX Link Quality, RSSI dBm and SNR are also really important OSD element to have on the display so you know the health of your RC Link, as are the number of satellites acquired and the home location arrow (if you have a GPS module installed). The Betaflight Warnings message is also a must on the OSD in my opinion because that will tell you of any imminent issues and/or help you to diagnose why your quad suddenly dropped from the sky.

I could never get SA to work.
The menu exit or save would freeze up the OSD and if powered up too long the vtx gets too hot.
I went back to using HDZero uart stick control.
Both sticks down and inward accesses the menu and sticks down and outward turns video off and lowers the power down so Vtx doesn’t overheat.

Well, I don't fly beyond spotter view range on a site with few obstructions, do not need GPS, and consider link quality on ELRS is sufficient. I have been to every last nook and cranny of our flying site, and not needed more info, nor really have the wish to be distracted from having fun with the base flying task. Since ELRS has proven itself 100% bullet proof, WAY better than FrSky, I have learned to trust it and just get on with my flying.

I thought SNR was pretty much discredited as a measure of anything truly useful?

The specific issue I have currently is that on HD setting in BF, the screen is showing/matching the correct Goggles/Transporter screen frame area, but the fields will not stay visible when moved anywhere near to that extent, cutting off and disappearing as they are moved right or down way before the visible screen and OSD screen "frames".

Some people consider the RSSI SNR is actually more important than Link Quality. It gives a good indication of where you have a high noise floor which could result in an unexpected failsafe. It's the very reason that the Betaflight devs included that as a new dedicated OSD element in Betaflight 4.4.x.

I don't like OSD elements in the middle of my screen (other than the normally invisible Warning element so I can see it if something flashes up), but I do put what I consider all of the most important ones at the side all together (battery data and RC link health) so I only have one place to periodically glance at. With the possibility of getting a black screen mid-flight on the DJI FPV System when you have WTFOS installed (detailed in another post HERE) or in the case if HDZero the rainbow screen of death, my policy is now to fit GPS modules to any quad that can take one as an insurance policy so I can initiate GPS Rescue in an emergency situation. Any OSD that is recorded to DVR can also help to diagnosing a problem post-flight if something unexpected happens. Sort of a poor man's black box data Big Grin
