FR10-G
#1
So, I finally got most of my parts to build my FR10-G in a mountain surfing format.  I also will be building a high speed format, but after seeing Wllmlutz's problems with amp load and fried ESCs, I will need to save up for APD 120 amp ESCs.  So instead of building 2 at once, I will only be building my new 10 inch mountain surfer.

I wanted to do something a little different this time and paint the frame before the build.  I have a favorite color, it's Black and Orange together.  So I tried to come up with a format for that and I like the end result.  I haven't come up with a name for the quad yet, but either Falcon, since there is an orange breasted Falcon.  Or Monarch, like the butterfly.  Whatever the name it needs to be something that flies. I'm entertaining ideas for a name.

I will paint the frame on the high speed 10 inch.  It will be green and I will name it the Green Hornet.

So this build will likely take a long time and there will be lots of narrative to go with the pictures....kind of like when my buddy SnowLeopardFPV does his builds.  So don't hate on me for being slow.  I would be faster but I have lots of honey do projects to complete.  Also, ifly4rotors has been assigning me work, so I have that to complete as well.  Big Grin

Below are the pics of the frame paint job.  I'm happy with the end result.  There are some minute errors in the paint job, but for the most part it turned out well.

So here are a few pics of the frame paint job....

[Image: 3398c286d3ae4770df1945105dbc7bd22ec72634.jpg]

This is the frame after sanding in preparation for paint.  also I masked the motor perches as I wanted to keep them smooth and level.

This is after 2 coats of primer.  White primer because if using fluorescent orange it is important.  If you use a dark primer the orange will be darker.

[Image: 40eb9cc1bfd46bfbd363c42409956260b2004d9f.jpg]

This is after 4 coats of fluorescent orange.  Although the can didn't say so it ended up being flat orange.

[Image: 7dc8ecad7c64567e4ac7876c78d057d6ea0316cf.jpg]

This is after a little black enamel to give the orange and black look I was looking for....

[Image: ac5d8b43c55900c2b1c1d554132c7605c6a5fc72.jpg]

This is the final on the paint job after 3 coats of clear.  In the pic the clear looks really thick, but that is a lighting issue.

Next I will mount the motors, after I remove the masking on the motor perches.

I'm considering painting the rotors.  I know that can cause imbalance, but most of the rotors need balance anyway, so why not paint them??.....the jury is still out on that.  So if you have input on painting the rotors, let me have it.  Maybe the paint will crack due to the flexing of the rotors in flight as they do....hmmmmm I just don't know.

The only braided loom that was orange and black was what Snow found for me.  But the manufacturer couldn't get it to me until as late as the end of November.  Me being somewhat impatient I decided to go with just orange and decorate it with black some how....more to come on that.

A new build post from Krohsis? This is exciting! The paint job looks amazing man. Can't wait to see this thing come together. By the way, I'm flying on the same esc's that I thought I burned up. The weirdest thing. I think they just got too hot and like failsafed on me? One day I plugged it in and all four were working. I've been flying it ever since. Not too far of course but I'm starting to get more confident every flight.

nice paint job! looks awesome!
;-) preparing my frames to send them up to you for painting :-)

i would be scary about reactions from the plastic of the blade from the paint. as some told of broken props in the air because of a tiny bit locktight on the shaft, not sure if it was truly reason... what kind of paint would you like to use?
dont loose this beautifull frame because of a prop issue Undecided

What a great looking paint job. Now I know exactly why you wanted the orange and black braided sleeving for your wires Cool

You certainly won't have a hard time searching for that if it ever goes down Big Grin

Interesting on the ESCs....I will keep an eye out on what happens with you.  I don't really want to spend 400.00 on the APD ESCs, as they are a bit of overkill, but I don't want to fry things.  I likely will be pushing mine harder than your too.  We will see.  Maybe someone will come out with ESCs that will do 100amps continuous, that should be good enough.

Good call on the paint on the blades, Huggy.  I'm still vacillating on what to do.  Knowing me, I will err on the side of caution and not paint.  But it could look soooo good.... Cool

Smokie, you called out the biggest down side of painting, weight.  Although it isn't that bad for a 10inch platform, but it added 23 grams.

Actually Huggy, it is black and orange, but it does look blue in the picture.... Big Grin

I don't have the actual weight of the frame assembled without paint here with me, but around 360 grams.

Props, (or rotors as I call them, important to be technically correct  Wink  )....will be T-motor CF 10 x 3.3 x 2 the same as I have on my stretched X 10 inch.....Great rotor blades that give great performance and are efficient.

Maybe, but I have a HUGE stock pile of these rotors as I got them for MUCH lower that retail price.  So the only way I have a different color is to paint them....and the jury is still out on that subject.  I think painting will cause more problems than satisfying the bling gene.

The masking removed from the motor perches.

And the motors mounted.  I just love the attention to detail the T-motor puts into their stuff.

I will do a component list soon, but the motors are T-motor MN3110-700.
