I’m experienced with building, solder, and flying planes but no quads. I have a Taranis + SE 2019 and will be getting a XF module and receivers. My taranis had several repairs needed but finally got a replacement and it’s working. So back to picking out my first quad. I don’t want a racer just something for good video reception, can take some crashes, and is big enough to see using line of sight. I thought about a BNF and if it’s worth the extra cost than 30 hours of building then maybe BNF. Balsa planes can take 40-120+ hours to build,sand,cover,etc... depending on size, appearance, number of colors,etc... but watching videos it’ll be the Betaflight, luas scripts, etc causing the time to add up I figure my first quad like plane will get banged around fairly quickly so maybe one more for durability versus looks. My weakness will likely be computer work needed because when I graduated with my MS computer science had just started and there was no computer requirements during those years. The internet didn’t happen until 15 years later and never heard of cell phones,no home computers were a thought yet. Any suggestions? • Posts: 21,397 Threads: 593 Likes Received: 9,029 in 6,683 posts Likes Given: 1,428 Joined: Jun 2018 Reputation: 795 10-Aug-2020, 12:26 AM (This post was last modified: 10-Aug-2020, 12:56 AM by SnowLeopardFPV. Edit Reason: Corrected hyperlink. ) If you want to start of gentle with a DIY "kit" that contains everything you need which you just need to assemble and solder together yourself, then there is the Eachine Tyro line of quads (Tyro 109, Tyro 119 or Tyro 129) which are budget friendly, or if you want to spend a bit more and get something with higher quality then there is the JB Edition Xilo kit. These kits are sort of a halfway house between BNF quads and completely self built quads (where you select and purchase all the individual components yourself). There are also plenty of instructional videos on YouTube for these kits if you get stuck. I’ll take a look. Thanks. Is there any way to substitute XF micro or nano in place of FrSky? • Posts: 12,098 Threads: 125 Likes Received: 3,739 in 2,836 posts Likes Given: 99 Joined: Feb 2017 Reputation: 388 As for your computer question, you can use a cell phone. But it is kind of cumbersome. My suggestion, get yourself into the computer age. A cheap Windows 10 laptop or spend a little money on a MacBook. How are you getting on the forum now? Most of the stuff you need to do can be done through the GUI. Others and myself include like to give help through CLI commands because it is just easier than trying to tell people where to switch or change settings through the GUI. The JB edition looks like its another version of this BNF phreakstyle. JB edition doesn’t include receivers, less costly motors, vtx cheaand a few other things so price of both ends ends up almost tne same. https://www.getfpv.com/xilo-phreakstyle-...r-rtf.html • Posts: 21,397 Threads: 593 Likes Received: 9,029 in 6,683 posts Likes Given: 1,428 Joined: Jun 2018 Reputation: 795 (10-Aug-2020, 07:12 AM)Rob3ddd Wrote: The JB edition looks like its another version of this BNF phreakstyle. I guess it depends if you want to buy something off the shelf that you can just fly out of the box or if you want to learn how to build something yourself. All the individual parts for the Xilo Preakstyle RTF come to ~$285, so you are effectively paying GetFPV another $65 to build it for you. You could of course buy all the parts individually and do the same build yourself to save yourself the additional $65. All the individual parts for the JB Edition Xilo kit comes to ~$250, so you are getting the kit at cost price but you have to build it yourself. And you do also get a JB step-by-step guide effectively for free on how to do that with the exact parts you get in the kit. You also need to buy a receiver ($20.99 for an R-XSR) and a LiPo Strap ($2.99), so with those also factored in the JB kit comes to around $10 less than the same as the component cost of the RTF (the RTF has better motors). • Posts: 1,844 Threads: 203 Likes Received: 346 in 264 posts Likes Given: 306 Joined: May 2020 Reputation: 11 10-Aug-2020, 03:03 PM (This post was last modified: 10-Aug-2020, 03:05 PM by Rob3ddd.) I was just looking at other options since it was out of stock. JB does do an excellent job in his instructional videos and that’s definitely a bonus. I have it on wishlist and signed up to get notified when it’s available. In the meantime I’ll watch the videos while I’m waiting. • |
