First build plans
#1
Hello all,

i ordered XILO 5" Freestyle Beginner Drone Bundle - Joshua Bardwell Edition but again it is backorderd so it might take ages to arrive...
So i wanted to start another build.
However new to the hobby i lack some information...
I wanna go for a 5" build.
Can i go with every frame ? Like geprc or this one https://www.getfpv.com/xilo-blue-hornet-...frame.html

So another question; Can i get combine the electrical components freely? Like the Mamba Fc Stack with any reciever / fpv transmitter?

The simple answer to all of your questions is yes.

If you post back all of the components you intend / want to use, we can then pass comment on those, but pretty much everything can be mixed and matched. Obviously if you get an ESC and FC from the same manufacturer your life will be generally be a bit easier because they just plug together without having to reconfigure any wiring harnesses, but there is nothing to stop you from picking different components from different manufacturers.

Goal is freestyle with an option for longrange.
I think, but please correct me, that 4S is still the to go standard?

Frames:
- GepRC Mark 4 https://geprc.com/product/gep-mark4-frame/
- Armattan Marmotte 5.5 https://www.getfpv.com/armattan-marmotte-5-5-frame.html (but i would prefere to build the frame as well)
- ImpulseRC Apex 5 (https://www.getfpv.com/impulserc-apex-5-...e-kit.html)
- Xilo Blue Hornet https://www.getfpv.com/xilo-blue-hornet-...frame.html (i have no Gopro yet...)

FC Stack;
- Xilo Stack combo https://www.getfpv.com/xilo-stax-combo.html
- Lumenier LUX F7 https://www.getfpv.com/lumenier-lux-f7-u...undle.html

Reciever has to be rapidfire...

Now i have no clue about antenna yet, also motors i am not yet there Wink

Ps: i did not check on the prices this moght be bloody expensive Wink

A lot of people are moving to 6S for freestyle. But 4S will work. There was another thread recently discussing the same. Of you plan are planning for longrange also, then I would go 6S. Longrange and 6S use lower kv motor. It is really not idea to use a single quad for both purposes.

For me, I would build the Geprc or the Armattan. I can't bare to spend that much money on an Apex without warranty. And the xilo frame looks very tight to build.

The stack, get the F7. No point buying F4. Save yourself the headache.

Thanks Voodoo,

Video transmitter i could go for https://www.getfpv.com/xilo-stax-5-8ghz-...600mw.html.

What about motors? (pros and antenna of course) what do i miss else?

I am partial to Armattan as well and have used their warranty on a number of occasions. On one occasion I couldn't believe they went through with it since the damage was really just a spider crack.

With that said, I've always said there is something about that Apex frame. I have no idea what it is but it just flies so damn good.

As for motors I am very biased ... T-Motor or bust. (But not the Pacers or Velox. I think you can get better value with other brands higher ends vs T-Motors lower end.)

Thanks ronin,

i assume i shoul get the Armattan frame directly from the company.
For the motors kinda like https://www.getfpv.com/t-motor-f40-pro-i...motor.html lle low kv option?

No, actually the warranty is good from any official vendor like getFPV, RDQ, etc.

Yes those are great motors and even the older Pro II's are very good. And by great I mean they fly very smooth, great heat dissipation so you can really push the D's and therefore your overall tune, and they can take a heavy beating and not skip a beat. But they are pricey and that is why.

The VTX looks nice. I never used one before. The build quality of the Xilo are very nice and great value. I have their ESC.

Tmotor are nice, can't go wrong if you stay with the F-Pro series. I have the most of these. If you get lucky, sometimes you can score older models for dirt cheap. But I also have a dozen others. Emax has always been good. But they really haven't made much of an impact lately. Also has Brotherhobby. The quad that I use most has hypetrain. The pyrodrone motors are always highly rated. I have a fully built quad with these but haven't flew it yet.

As for props, they are so cheap. Try them all. That is my advice. I really like the dalprops cyclone.

Antenna, there is so many choices, I don't even know where to start. I am glad I don't have to worry. I just make my own Pagoda antenna. I think I have enough to make another 100 antenna before I use up my PCBs.

FPV camera? Battery strap? XT60 pigtail? Extra nylon standoffs. Extra motor nuts. Battery grip (3M duallock or Ummagrip)

I thought shipping was only $5 through Armattan.

BTW how do you attach the comment here from the previous post?

Indeed i forgott about the FPV camera, the XT 60 pigtail. Battery strap, i have one in mind.
What are the extra nylon standoffs for? and the extra motor nuts.

If you click the "Reply" button under the actual post you want to reply to it will include the contents of that post as a quoted reply. If you want to quote multiple posts, click the "Quote" button under each of the posts you want to appear as quoted in your reply, then press the black "New Reply" button at the bottom.

Extra nylon stand-offs are to give you more options when mounting the stack because the kits will include a selection of different length stand-offs so you can make the whole stack taller or shorter as you wish. On tight builds you need to use the shortest stand-offs so you can physically fit the whole stack inside the frame. It's also useful to have extra stand-offs in case you break any in a crash and need to replace them.

Extra motor nuts in case you lose any, otherwise you could end up grounded for no good reason.

As for the stand-offs should.i go for
https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/produ...et-180pcs/

As for the camera something like:
https://www.getfpv.com/foxeer-micro-cat-...2-1mm.html

Now the pigtail do i go for 12 or 16 AWG without or with capacitor?
for the motor nuts (spare ) you mean the once to the motor or the once on the props?

Yes, stand-offs like the ones you linked to.

Everyone has their own views and preferences as to which are the best cameras so you just need to watch a load of reviews. Gal Kremer on YouTube has an interesting rig on his quad that allows him to test 4 FPV cameras side-by-side so you can see the exact  same footage on all 4 cameras from a live flight to compare the difference. I would check out his channel.

On a 5" quad I tend to use 12AWG wire. Some people use 14AWG but I prefer to use the fatter wire on a 5" where possible. I wouldn't personally use 16AWG on a 5" quad because I consider it too thin. As long as you use the same gauge wire as soldered to the LiPo itself for the XT60 connector then that will be sufficient.

When I was talking about motor nuts I was referring to the nut on top that secures the prop to it.
