ESC mounting outside the box
#1
I really like the look of ESC free arms on a quad.  But I'm not a fan of 4 in 1 ESCs.  Their failure rate compared to standard systems is WAY out of wack.

So I have been trying to come up with different ways to accomplish the look of 4 in 1 with a standard 4 ESC system.

Has anyone ever tried to mount the ESCs on the bottom of the top plate?  Is there interference issues to be concerned with the ESCs being in close proximety of the FC, RX, VTX, Cam, etc.?

Another option is to create a new bottom plate with stand offs and all the ESCs would go into that area.  Getting and cutting the carbon so it looks good would be a challenge for those of us with out access to the proper tools.

Any other ideas?

If none of the above will work, I'll just mount the ESCs on the arms....but those bare arms are just sooooo sexy!  Big Grin

It's just a matter of designing something that will work and still look professional and neat.  Here's one from 3 years ago with the design you mentioned with ESCs sandwiched between 2 bottom plates

Edit: Only the 2 rear ESCs fit, you can see the front 2 where the camera should go. Fail hahaha

Here is a picture of the Fossils Stuff Gravity 280 frame that I fly(not mine), but I put the esc's in the front just like this in my first version of it.  They were 20 amp little bees so they are small.  I'm sure your esc's are larger but I'm guessing two in front and two in back would fit.  I had no issues with this setup except they got a little hot once and one burned up(maybe too because of the 20amp rating, I've since upgraded to 30amp but they are now mounted out on the arm).  Your frame is way more open so I don't think heat would be a problem.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the examples!  You have given me something to ponder.

So far I'm leaning towards a plate under the current bottom plate to sandwich the ESCs into.  I will mess with it maybe with some 1/16th inch aluminum plate (or wood) for a template.  If I like it, I will try to find a source for CF sheets to make the final plate.

Again, I appreciate the pictures!

have you seen the new iflight slim + escs?

You can heat shrink these and place them side by side and zip tie them to the bottom of the bottom plate outside the frame. It looks pretty spacey. Then use magnet wire to wire up the motors to keep it nice and tidy.

No, I haven't seen those.  Have you used them, or know of anyone who has?

That might be a secondary option....
