Elrs Telemetry
#1
Hello,
I have a Tx16s on edgetx and a happymodel elrs module.
Recently when doing los test flights after changing some components on my quads I noticed I was losing on screen telemetry, (set up so I wouldn’t need to put on goggles) yet I’m not losing control.
Tx power is set to 10mw so as not to swamp the telemetry at close range.
I have tested for this behaviour on both of my quads and both do it( Happymodel Ep1 and Matek R-24 D).
Also for testing I rotate ( pirouette) the quads in the air to see if telemetry is lost when in the antenna null, but that does not seem to be the problem.
On test flights with goggles there is no lost telemetry or loss of control.
I’m thinking it’s something to do with the module connection to the radio, but I don’t have enough experience troubleshooting, so I’m hoping for some input from people with more experience.

If you have the original HappyModel ES24TX module (non-Pro), the JR bay case it came with fit poorly, causing the module to be loose in the bay with a flaky connection. Updated cases can be purchased for $3, or you can 3d print one.

The other things to check would be your module baud rate (now under the External RF section of the model setup screen in the latest EdgeTX). With the TX16S, you should be able to increase the baud rate to 3.75M without issue. Also verify you have selected a high enough telemetry ratio for your packet rate, ideally something that provides 3-4 telem packets per second. So at least 1:128 @ 500Hz, 1:64 @ 250Hz, etc.

I do have the original module. The fit is not as tight as I would like it to be but I don’t think I have had trouble because of that.
I will check the baud rates and telemetry ratios next because I did play with baud rates recently, mainly to see if I could get the expresslrs lua script to load a bit faster.
Will test and report if successful.

As far as buying a new case if needed, I stuck the included double sided tape to the pcb and screwed it to the case. Is there a good way to get the tape to release without damage to the pcb?

You can try heating it up with a blow dryer from the other side for a good 5 mins evenly distributing the heat in a circular pattern which will help soften the glue on the sticky tape.

Careful not to melt the plastic.

And I said hair dyer, not a hot air gun Smile

Thanks for the tips.
I’m pretty sure the telemetry ratio was too low.
I have been running @ 250hz and 1:128 this whole time and never noticed I was losing telemetry until I did the los test flights.

I tried 1:16 and did not lose telemetry. Unfortunately I sank the quad in the pond I was flying next to right after, so I will try to fish it out of there and see if it can be salvaged?

Well now you definitely need a hair dryer Smile

Sorry for the incident with your quad. Hopefully you recover it and have minimal damage and repairs that need to be done.
