PhantomFPV has some flying skills there.

Take note that Phantom FPV is using APC bi-blade 9" props which he says are much better than the tri-blade props. So those are probably well worth trying.

I'm not sure where in Australia you can get those but they are these ones...

Yes, he did mention that. That is probably the reason why he is getting some good flight times and probably not drawing too much current on a Lumenier 3500mah 6s with an XT60 connector from what I can see in his video.

I am avoiding buying anything online (especially from overseas) at the moment as I have a few items in the mail stuck in Sydney due to the lock downs regardless of AusPost claiming they are fully operational.

Once I get the 5mm OD bearings I will try to balance the HQ 9" tri-blade props and see how well it performs.

Once I destroy those I will test some bi-blades.

But personally I have not been a big fan of bi-blades except for running them on the Flywoo Explorer LR for efficiency.

Has anyone built an 8S version of this quad?

Nothing stopping you from building a 8S or 12S version but then a 4in1 ESC will not cut it and you will need APD individual ESC's which cost more and you will need larger lipos that add so much weight.

In the 6S configuration the Merica 9" remains fairly affordable and has fairly good flight characteristics.

If you want an 8S or 12S version then just build an Xclass. Those things are expensive and crashing/repair is expensive too.

Thanks — what I was thinking was a 2 x 1300 or 1500 4s pack which isn’t that much heavier than the big 6s packs people run on the quads today. On the ESC, is the iFlight 8s 4-in-1 a viable option? Looks like it’s rated for the job but not sure if it’s reliable…

The iFlight 4in1 80amp ESC rated for 8S costs $200.

I have not seen anyone running 8S flights on that ESC and coming back to say it lasted them 20 flights.

Its definitely doable but with larger quads mistakes can become very expensive.

there is an inexpensive racerstar esc which is 8s capable, 50a if i remember well, would like to know how it works xD

on huge motors, the adp 80esc mightbe a good choice but their size doesnt match the merica. overall the market options might bring you to xclass and 12s if you like the power of huge build, its very expensive but there are a few choices

Hi @kafie1980
I'm not far from buying a Merica 9inch for Christmas..
What is your feedback after all this time, do you regret your purchase ? several things scare me in this story (propellers, lipos..)

Is it also different from other quads ?

Thanks Smile

No complains about the quad and build quality.

Just keep in mind you will need a 4in1 ESC with the highest amp rating you can find, ideally 60 to 70 amps rated. Or better yet single ESC's. I have not blown my ESC yet but I have not flown the quad in anger.

Its a bit on the tight side and the canopy design is something to consider in that will your components fit inside.

I have flown it around 20 times since I built it usually on days when I am sure the parklands will be empty such as on a weekday during work hours as I am sure there will be no one around. It just attracts too much attention. I can't justify driving to a very remote location just to fly one pack and come back on a weekend.

Its an expensive quad to fly with regards to the lipos and props. Both cost a significant amount of money and the HQ 9" props are just too brittle unlike polycarbonate props we have for quads upto the 7" size.

On the topic of props, most people now tend to fly bi-blades since they break less in a crash but the flight dynamics are not as sweet as tri-blades. Apart from the HQProp 9x4.5x3R we also have Gemfan CL Cinelifter 9045 props available (I have not personally tried these but here in Australia they are double the price of HQ props).

Hi
Thank you for your opinion
Is this quad really out of the ordinary  ?
The idea is to have a racer that makes me smile (even if for that you have to be afraid Confused )

I think Lumenier makes a 100amp AIO?

Someone on youtube was going over it and I just ran across it. I just came across this thread and I find it interesting that a big 9" is really out of the ordinary these days. I suppose I can see that now, however - how many of us all got started in this hobby with a 10" DJI Flamewheel F450?

I still have mine and I was looking into building another 10" myself because I have (4) still in their shrink wrapping - Avroto 2814 - 770kv 6s motors...
I'd like to so SOMETHING really cool with them. (or just sell them I suppose)

A racer that makes you smile will be the SwitchbackPro for me as its very fast and agile. But its not a freestyle rig in that you can definitely freestyle with it but its built light for racing.

Weight restrictions and all the drone laws around the world have kinda made this a bit low on everyones build list.
