Carbon Fiber quality???
#1
Never bought or made anything from carbon fiber but I do have a question. I have built a GepRC Mark 4 HDV about a year ago'ish, I have crashed it multiple times, some of them hard crashes, and apart from the minor scratches and dirt, it looks like a new frame. I recently built a frame from what I thought was a good name brand (won't mention name here) and on my third flight came a little too close to the grass in the park and planted it in the mud, which I did not think was too hard of a crash. After cleaning it up I noticed that the end of the carbon as it sticks out from the motor was broken off and the carbon is splintering. Maybe I hit harder than I thought but I am wondering if some frame makers are using lower quality carbon. Is that a known thing???

Feel free to mention the name! Inquiring minds like to know. I like to put TPU printed bumpers covering the ends of the arms. Yeah they add a little weight but not enough to effect flight on a bigger quad.

It is a Catalyst Machineworks 5" BangGOD, which I thought was supposed to be indestructible, well as Indestructible as they get. I was just surprised that on the first crash the carbon fiber broke like it did.

There are different quality of carbon fiber. And I have to agree with you, whatever CF GEPRC uses, it is tough.

there is the thikness of the fibers (? i believe so); 12k carbon, 3k carbon.
there is also a label "t700" carbon, "t800". i dont understand that rating.

one of the best carbon fiber quality i own on a frame is the carbon on the flightclub tokio/proton.
the best might be my hand moulded carbon frame, from the manufacturer of the stardust frames. actual hand moulded can be the best, the fiber directions can be freely added to get the best out of a frame geometry.

informations about your settup.. battery weight.. buildweight... we can probably suggest a matching frame.

there are definitely different quality carbon fibers... however, you could have had the same quality on both quads and experienced the exact same thing. What you might think as a soft crash might be worse than what you'd think a hard crash is based on the angle and many other factors.

I've crashed smack into the concrete with no damage at all, and on the same frame crashed in dirt and lost two arms...... Anyway my point is that this is not a sufficient test to decide whether or not one carbon is better than the other.........

In this case I think it just comes down to knowledge and experience seeing quality carbon. Either that or just straight up KNOWING.

Armattan is probably the only frame manufacturer that offer a life time frame replacement warranty but only for their Armattan Quads frames sold at authorized resellers:

https://armattanquads.com/warranty-claims/

You can ask Armattan to cut a custom frame for you via the https://armattanproductions.com/ but these will not be covered under warranty.

Sometimes the cheapest frame can take a beating e.g. TBS SourceOne that has lasted me several crashes.

If you have one of the original, it is lifetime warranty. But he stopped the lifetime warranty one new frames.
