Best FPV Cameras for UMX Aircraft?
#1
Looking to pick up a FPV setup for my UMX aircraft. Most are Spektrum/Horizon/E-Flite brand, and Spektrum sells their own FPV camera (https://www.spektrumrc.com/Products/Defa...=SPMVA1100). However, the specs seem pretty crappy, especially considering the price. (Note: I have a FatShark HDO 5.8GHz RHCP setup).

Oscar has a great article on AIO FPV cams here that I found helpful: https://oscarliang.com/aio-fpv-camera-vtx-combo/
It looks like the article was last updated over a year ago, are there any new cameras worth considering?

In the comments, someone mentioned AKK brand cameras with built-in OSD. This would be nice for the UMX aircraft, as they have no flight controller. I haven't been able to find much info on them, however, and a few of the reviews I have seen are questionable.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated!

I'm not familiar with this aircraft but I've never had much love for any aio cam/vtx. Planes just eat up too much sky, take wide corners and can't punch out like a quad or turn around as abruptly if you lose video. I prefer a higher output vtx that I haven't seen on an aio.

Theres likely nothing preventing you from using a separate cam/vtx combo. I would highly recommend going this route unless this thing is small and slow.

That makes sense. What would you recommend for a micro system if I use separate cam/VTX? Do any VTX have OSD built-in?

The vtx does not at least not any I've used but many cams have a simple osd with battery voltage. These are usually the mid and premium lineup from about every major manufacturer. This will be pricier than the aio but look around theres some deals to be had that have what you need. And good video makes a world of difference in enjoyment and confidence.

Do you think a Runcam Phoenix 2 or Micro Eagle with a Runcam TX200U would be a good combination to try out?

The phoenix is an excellent camera with good dynamic range. Meaning it can adjust quickly when going from a dark area to bright and vice versa. It's one of my favorites.

I've not used a runcam vtx, it's only 200mw. That will work for closer ranges but likely have very little ability to penetrate objects like trees. For the price though it will get you airborne comfortably in open spaces and could get some range if some attention is paid to antenna placement.

Ultimately you probably find you want more and the tbs unify 800mw would be a great choice but there's many off brand 400/600/800mw for very similar prices to the one you linked.

I fly small electric planes like your UMX and I use an All In One camera/VTX. They are small and cheap and can be hooked right into the plane's 1S LiPo battery for power.

How much range are you expecting? Since your plane is in the same weight and size range as mine, you probably weren't flying more than 150 meters from your transmitter. My AIO camera/VTX transmits at only 25mW, I have the cheapest box goggles I could find and it works just fine for me.

The plane I'm flying now has a 14 inch wingspan and weighs 75 grams. The Camera/VTX combo weighs less the 4 grams. Any separate camera and VTX will be heavier and, like my plane, every gram counts.

What do you need OSD for? Battery voltage alone or something else?

Yeah, the range isn't so important with the UMX aircraft. I was mostly trying to find out if there were any interesting options to add an OSD/HUD just for the coolness factor without having to add a flight controller on top of everything else.

I might revisit this in the spring, or just leave the FPV for my mid/long range craft and keep flying the UMX LOS Smile

Ah. There actually is a standalone OSD option but it may be outside our weight class.

This is the 'Tarot TL300L2 Mini OSD'. It's has its own gyro, compass and acceleration and can also measure battery voltage. All you need to do is connect it between your camera and VTX (some of the AIO camera/VTXs even have a breakout video in/out lines that can be used for this purpose.

It even has an artificial horizon!

It weighs almost 6 grams (minus GPS module) but I think it'd weigh half as much if you remove the shrink wrap it comes in. It only runs on 2S so you'd have to do some modding on your plane for it to work at all.

There's already some discussion on how to turn a small 1S RC plane into a 2S one on my thread.

Caveats: I don't think it's being made anymore. If you goggle it, you can find one but it'll be expensive (~$60 USD).

[Edit] I just realized that you've already seen my thread!
