Beginner DIY with a turnigy radio
#1
Hello everyone,

I would love to start building my own tiny whoop from scratch and configure it later. My only constraints is that i already have a radio turnigy evolution. I tried to build things myself 4 years ago, but it failed....

Do you have any recommendation on a DIY tiny whoop I could build myself ? ideally with a great end to end tutorial but also easy pieces to buy online from Europe

thanks a lot for the help

Most 1S tiny whoops are based around a AIO board which come with built in RX and VTX. Couple that with 0802 motors and a frame, canopy and a nano camera and you have a tiny whoop.

Not much point building one over a BNF and may cost you more money getting parts to build one yourself.

The only reason people build their own tiny whoops is to chase a certain technical or weight goal.

Or for the sake of ticking the box of building a tiny whoop. A Meteor75 or Mobula7 isn't expensive to buy and will be cheaper than what you DIY. IF you want to build something, build a 3-4". It can still be a whoop, it just wont be a tiny whoop.

https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/produ...whoop-bnf/ - Mobula6 has a FlySky option (out of stock here) - £75 + Postage
https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/produ...uadcopter/ - Moblite6 has a FlySky option (is in stock here) - £75 + Postage
https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/produ...uadcopter/ - Moblite7 - Same as above (not in stock here) - £75 + Postage

or
https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/produ...whooppick/ - Both have a FlySky option.

In fact it looks like most from Happymodel have a FlySky option.

Also.

https://yourfpv.co.uk/product/hglrc-petr...-350mw-2s/ - FlySky option and in stock - £115
or if you want a bit more power.
https://yourfpv.co.uk/product/hglrc-petr...-350mw-4s/ - FlySky option, in stock and 4S - £141

Don't know where you are in Europe. But in the UK there are a few available. Hope that helps.

The OP's profile states Berlin (Germany).

Unfortunately since Brexit took full effect it has completely F'd importing and exporting of goods between the UK and the EU where you now end up paying extortionate shipping charges along with import taxes, but if someone is desperate enough that money isn't an issue then UK vendors are certainly an option.

Two there on Amazons German site that have a FlySky Option. But looks like they are coming from China. Is FlySky compatible with the LBT standards in the EU. That might be why it's a real PITA to find anything with FlySky in Germany.

If I will suggest or advise anything to the OP it will be to let go of the constraint to use the "Turnigy Evolution (FlySKY compatible)" radio.

Its just too old for the tech and moving forward will always be a show stopper in terms of buying BNF's since almost no new products are coming with FlySKY receivers. Most vendors do not want to even stock up on FlySKY compatible stuff.

Its a one time expense but its much more affordable today to get an OpenTX radio with built-in ExpressLRS 2.4GHz.

OK thanks everyone, crystal clear, understood for the radio

What if i remove this constraints and just look for a DIY drone to build and buy from germany ? (i like the idea of building it and programming)

Any recommendation ? Radio + goggle + kit ?

I had a look at the 10 or so shops in Germany and it seems you shouldn't have any issue going down that route.

So for a 1-2S whoop, you would need something like this.

1. A frame. Take your pick, something in a 65/75/85mm form factor will suffice.
2. An FC.  I like the BetaFPV AIO FC with ELRS, especially the 12A version that will run 1-2S.  But there are many more you could use.  Try looking at the Mr Shutterbug videos on Youtube to get some ideas.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkSK8m8...EXzh1k6RKA
3. Motors.  BrettBrandon and LemonyLeprosy have builds atm using these RCinpower 1002 19000kv motors.  They seem to be pretty good and will fit a Meteor75 frame.  Check out the Meteor75 build thread that Brett made.
4. VTX.  Anything that will do at least 200mw and doesn't weigh much should be fine.
5. Camera.  Light as possible.  Runcam Nano, Caddx Ant, BetaFPV C02, etc.
6. Props.  Match to the motor you are using.

7.  A new Radio that ideally does ELRS (if you are going down that path).  So Radiomaster Zorro, Jumper T-Pro ELRS, BetaFPV Literadio 3 ELRS, etc.  If you are going down the 4-in-1 MultiProtocol Route, you could get something bigger, like RadioMaster TX12/16, or stick with Jumper T-Lite or T-Pro 4-in-1, BetaFPV LiteRadio 2/3/Pro 4-in-1, etc.  You could also, if you wanted, go for something with Crossfire or Tracer and run ELRS or Multiprotocol from an external module.  So TBS Tango if you want Crossfire built in (and like a game controller type radio), TBS Mambo if you are looking for Tracer.

Others will probably chime in with other resources to look at or ideas.

Caveat.  I am also new to this hobby and still learning, so research and ask questions.
