Barometer best practices
#1
Years ago I built and flew quads using Open Pilot Revolution FC’s. It was recommended then to 3D print a case for the FC and to cover the baro with a piece of open cell foam in order to ensure baro accuracy.

I have a CF 10” in progress that will be setup with iNav. Just wondering what the current thinking is with ensuring baro accuracy?

Some builds don't seem to need it some do. Depends on the design, layout, canopy or not, the airflow throughout the stack. I prefer to use an open board without anything for cooling unless i have issues then ill just wedge a small piece of soft foam between the stacks over the barometer keeping it as small as possible to keep the airflow over other components.

The baro is on the bottom of this FC, unlike the Revo. Easy to sandwich a little foam between it and the ESC stack.
Thanks for your response.

I always seem to get much more accurate (and less fluctuating) altitude readings with a small piece of open cell foam over the barometer, so I have now got into the habit of always doing that even if it might not be needed in some cases. I find the foam you get in the battery boxes of some brands of LiPo is ideal.

Just use the foam from a microphone or headset as its the right type in my opinion.

I have a piece of foam covering all my baro's. Before I started doing that I did quite a bit of testing trying to diagnose one baro issue.

For FCs that have the Baro n the bottom I simply position a piece of foam between the fc and esc. I usually use a piece about 8mm thick so it is well squashed.

For an fc with a baro on top I made a little transparent plastic cover with two holes 20mm apart so the fc screws hold it and the foam goes between the plastic and the Baro.

My third baro is simply a little bmp280 i2c board. It is small so I wrapped the whole board plus the foam in kapton tape leaving one side open.

Also, I would be interested in hearing from anyone using dps310 baro in betaflight and what temperature accuracy you get. As I have 2 of them and two of bmp280 and the bmp280 are substantially better despite the datasheet.

I have 1 FC with DPS310, an external DPS310 I2C module and 2 other FC's with BMP280 but I have never tested them side by side.

Based on the datasheets DPS310 is supposed to be superior compared to BMP but I assume the DPS310 code is not updated or mature enough to compensate for temperature variations.

With Betalight there is not much autonomous flying apart from a GPS Rescue function to help out of danger before regaining video/RC signal. So in the grand scheme of things I am not sure it matters much.
