Adjusting the picture to my eyesight in a new set of goggles
#1
I recently bought a secondhand pair of Skyzone SkyO2Cs. Since their arrival, I've been trying to tune them to get a decent view through them. At the moment, the best I've managed to do is get two images with some overlap in the middle. Additionally the right hand image seems tilted. It looks a little like this:

I've played at length with the IPD adjustment, and it sometimes seems as though the two images are coming together but there's always enough duplication in what I am seeing to create a less than clear view.

I do wear glasses, for reading / screen work. I struggle to see up very close. However, I can read all the information on the OSD and so I don't think it's my prescription at fault. Of course, I haven't ruled this out.

Up until now I've had a trusty set of EV800Ds which I can put on my head, and despite them feeling awkward to wear, I've found the vision to be fine.

I appreciate that this is a really vague question, and so it might not be an easy one to contribute answers to - I wonder though, did anyone else have a similar experience when they first starting wearing goggles like these? Is there a defined process which you can follow to tune the goggles to your eyes?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The IPD is really the only thing that can be adjusted. The fact that one eye's display is tilted makes me think the goggles are defective.

I too need glasses for reading (old age!) but my distance vision is 20/15. When flying with goggles I can read the OSD fine without my readers at all and of course the distance stuff is excellent. Maybe you're the same, depending on what strength you need for reading? Might be worth a shot.

I Had this problem also with some Fatshark Altitude V3's my first goggles, I have quite a narrow face so i could never get the images to appear as one, The Image was not tilted just overlapping so i was seeing ghosting on the osd.

So i took a chance as the osd almost focused on the V3 they were a little off not too much, So i brought some Orqa's and that was enough to solve my problem but it one expensive fix.
Maybe you could let a friend with good eyesight wear them and see if they can get a good image.  and try some lower IPD goggles if you know anyone with some.

Orqa IPD = 56 -74mm  (My IPD turns out to be somewhere between 56 - 59mm)
skyzone 02C IPD = 59 - 69mm
Atitude v3 59 -69mm
Fatshark HD02 54 to 74 mm (some people have had problems with a small IPD) as it moves the screen closer.

Just some idea's, I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks to those that have replied. Thanks in particular to you @sircolin - I've been looking for a table which lists all goggles so that I could compare their respective IPD measurements.

I've actually been to the opticians today, to get a copy of my prescription. The IPD for my left eye is 33mm and my right eye is 35mm. The total of those would appear to be at the very extreme of the O2Cs. For distance, I need +1.25 in my right eye, and +1.75 in my left. (I have another, stronger measurement for screen/reading which I am ignoring.) I'm going to try using a +2 diopter in the left lens, and leaving the right one with the default.

I hope I can get this sorted, upgrading to Orqa / HD02 seems an expensive way to solve this problem! Smile

Hmm - I've just realised the diopters I have are negative values - for some reason I had it in my head that they were positive values.

I can play with the IPD a little, and then take the goggles out and fly with them some, to see if I can train my eyes. Weather looks a bit poop here for the next few days though, unfortunately.

Thanks again for the assistance!

I have similar problem, need +2 diopters for both eyes for distance. Can't get those unless you do custom and they are pricey.

I found these and they work great. Just trim to the size you need and stick them on. Come back off easily if you need to clean but they stay in place and don't fall off.

I had a similar problem too with my Fatshark v5. I bought a pair of reading glasses from the $5 shop and cut up and filed down the lenses to fit the diopter slots. I found the drawings somewhere on the web of the Fatshark diopters that gave all the specific dimensions. I think the ones I got where +1.5. That made a lot of difference for me. Maybe you could get 2 different pairs and cut 1 from ea or for your eyes.

Thanks for suggesting those Sugs / Timmy Smile I've just ordered some cheap glasses on amazon, I'll have a go at hacking them apart this weekend to see if that improves things. We'll see how it goes. If it appears to be a long term viable solution, I'll get some of those bi-focal stick ons.

Before you get to hacking the glasses, put some duct tape on the lenses on both sides so you don't scratch them while working on them. You can then use a pen to draw on them to mark your cut lines.

Good advice! Thanks! I have been wondering how best to cut them. I was thinking of buying a dremmel or similar, on the assumption it would probably make the cleanest cut. Putting some tape on to hold them together, and to protect the lens is something I hadn't thought of.

I cut mine with a 4" angle grinder and a 1mm cut off blade. I then used the linisher belt and hand file to finish it up. The hardest part is to get the edges the right thickness to fit neatly in the diopter slots. I'm a fitter and Turner so used my vernier calipers to get that right. Take your time and don't rush it, you'll get it.

I had a go on one lens tonight. It fits. Sort of. Cut down to size with the cutting wheel. That was fine. Then I tried to use the milling bit. I think that was a mistake. You’re right, getting the edges slim enough to fit into the rail is the hard part. I’ll have another go over the weekend. Thanks again for your ideas and guidance.

@danruff: did you manage to sort out the issue? I have the same issue with the right image tilted in my hdo2 and about the send it back to the store. with other googles I don’t have the issue so I suspect the display is not in place and damaged during transport

Definitely send it back to the store. Seems like the lens assembly is not correctly setup or is broken.
