Help selecting the "right" combination of motor/prop
#1
Folks, I just got me another wing for my collection. It's a ZOHD Dart XL Extreme 1000mm really really nice looking. I've yet to open the box and get started on it.

Here's what I need help with:

#1 the best motor size/brand at a reasonable cost. One that will provide me the best performance for the money.  Sunnysky and TMOTOR brands come to mind. I just need the "right" one for this wing.

#2 the best propeller size/brand for this motor.

NOTHING CHEAP IS EVER GOOD! So I am not asking for cheap. I'm asking for a good reasonably priced combo.

Thanks all!

SO, do you want to cruise inc long duration, or is speed more important? What will be the all up weight? How big a cell pack will you use? Not enough info in your post to advise without blind guesswork.

Also................... "NOTHING CHEAP IS EVER GOOD!".................. Rubbish (from long experience).

I have fast flying wings with Suppo 2212-6T 2200kV and 2400kV that have been working regularly month in month out for well over a decade and cost around £5 back then. Just checked and they are $6 on Fleabay current. These are 22 x 12 rotor, or 28 x 36 external as some makes use.

Got at least fifteen of these in use, and others in differing kV inc on scale warbird foamies.

Just one example, one is capable of hauling a 1 metre reinforced and colour taped foam chevron wing (with FPV) at over 70mph with good economy on a speed APC 7x5, 40A cheap Hobbywing ESC, 2200mAh 3S.

Nothing fancy man just cruising on a 5500mah.

Show me one thing cheap that's good and that lasts please. I'd like to know because I've yet to find a single one. In electronics you always get what you pay for! Especially in motors.

I will start looking at the samples you so kindly provided.

thanks

The motor I gave as an example is NOT suitable to drage around a 5500mAh, which is why to get an assist you need to indicate as my post started!

Hi,

In order to dimension correctly what we call "power train" (Battery+ESC+Motor+Propeller), you should take in consideration some parameters of the whole setup, like weigth, wing span and area, drag, field elevation/air temperature/pressure, nr. of battery cells , capacity and discharge rate, esc nominal and max current, motor size and KV and finally propeller diameter, pitch, nr. of blades and fligth speed. Once you have this data, you are able to identify the motor and blade technical parameters, so easy to find the motor and blades on the market fulfilling what you call good quality at reasonable price.

The best way to get a quite precise dimensioning is using the eCalc tool.  eCalc

This tool works quite well and is very popular too!

What altitude are you planning to fly at?

If you take a look at the web page for the ZOHD Dart XL Extreme they listed a 2216-1300 kV motor. 9 X 4.5 propeller. 30A speed controller. 4S 3300 mah battery pack. Flying weight at 1200 grams. That's pretty much everything you need to know to find the "right" combination.

Yes you are correct that nothing cheap is ever good so don't buy cheap. Sunnysky and T Motor had served me very well. Since you already have all the specs that is "RIGHT" for this plane what else do you need to know? I would google some online vendors and buy those hardware. If you are in the US I usually buy my Sunnysky from Buddy RC.

I personally like APC props.

If we compare fpv to other markets, fpv parts are pretty "cheap" overall, lets say inexpensive. There are other rc areas where value for money is much worse.
Inexpensive is just a focus, your exact needs would give the route. Sometimes the most expensive part is the most inexpensive in longterm use, but rc has much good low budget products.

I would try a decent apc propeller
