AI Drone Simulator - new sim
#1
Apparently you can upload your blackbox log and it'll produce a quad that flies like the real thing...$30 is a bit steep for something nobody really seems to be talking about, though.

EDIT: A couple of friends took the plunge and were raving about it, so I said why not since Steam has a good refund policy. For something that's brand new it's really, really good. I haven't gotten too deep into tweaking but right out of the box it flies really well and the maps are great. Hopefully online multiplayer is something in the works.

Proud team pilot for brands I love: Dquad - Happymodel - Gemfan

Hi,

I'm Thierry, the main dev of AiDroneSim. I'm glad to hear your good review =)
We will work on multiplayer but this is unfortunately not for now. Current road map is :
- Mac OS version.
- Some really awesome maps in free DLCs.

Then we will work at multiplayer.
For information the USD $30 is indeed a bit high because as I'm from EU I fixed the price in € first, with VAT. So the good news : it will be only $25 in USA soon !

Everyone is welcome to ask me anything here, or on the discord ever of the game, or by mail at diophante dot studio at gmail dot com.
Thanks you !

I bought this game as well. I just love it!!! I'm confused as well as to why I don't hear much about it online. I think it's mostly due to people already having Velocidrone, etc. Great game and thanks for creating it Thierry. Hopefully a huge amount of people will realize it's out there and fun as hell and development keeps going Smile

I only every fly freestyle in the sims and I think this game is overall my favorite above Velocidrone, Liftoff and DRL. All the different game maps get boring after a while so it's nice to have variety. AI Drone loads the fastest and my favorite feature is that when you trip the reset you're placed right where you last were last at rather than the default start location. So you don't have to fly all the way back to the spot you were last at when you're trying to practice moves.

I bought AiDroneSim a couple of days ago and have a question.

Beside flying a DJI Phantom Pro and a Tello, i'm completely new to FPV. I did fly planes and helicopters a lot before but that was more than 15 years ago.

I downloaded and installed AiDrone, connected my old Realflight USB controller and it works perfect.
Now i have tried flying and i must say that cruising (That's what i want to do) works quit OK!
I have a Flywoo Explorer 4 on my bench ready for maiden and have been very nervous to take it out but now i feel a little better.
So, how close to reality is it to fly in a sim? Do you recognise some of the behavior?

For cruising I would say it translates very well to real life. The only things I notice that doesn't feel the same is gravity for freestyle, like the quad floats too much compared to the real quads I fly. But I'd only say that for trying to pull freestyle tricks like pulling out of a dive without cratering. I feel like I have better control over my real quads with some things than in the sim. All the time you can stand spent in sim will pay you back I think.

If you have been flying helicopters in the past you’ll have no problem. With FPV you never have to worry about the right and left roll being backwards as your always looking forward. The throttle works the same. Instead of collective pitch the quad just varies motor speed. Yaw works the same your just not swinging a big tail around. I flew helicopters in the past and the quad really flies very similar. I’d say the quad is able to fly circles around a helicopter.

Thank you for your answers! I feel much calmer now!
Due to weather and health issues, there has not been a maiden yet but there have been a few more hours in the simulator.
It's so much fun to fly and AI Drone Sim works perfectly!
Buy it!

It depends a lots of the quad in the sim. Tweaking the aerodynamic drag settings (first 3 parameters) can help to have a better feeling. (less drag to float less, then maybe lower the motors power accordingly ).
But globally I'm with you, good sims have the physics 90% right or so, no perfect but 100% fine to learn at start with near 100% skill transfer to real life.

Last news of the sim :
- New free DLC map : https://store.steampowered.com/app/17704...1950s_Map/
- 300€ FPV video contest on the new map : https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/...6247674428

Fun to have the main Dev here. Good that you are curious about what users think.

And then I can take the opportunity to ask another question.
Which game engine is used for AI Drone Sim?

I run some other simulators and games such as Mud runner and Farming simulator.
But I have spent significantly more time making new maps than playing the games themselves. I think it is very fun to first create (big) landscapes and then fill them with trees, vegetation and all sorts of objects.

Would be fun to do something similar that you could then fly around in and over! And since I like cruising the best, it could be fun to do something bigger but still have places to build racing tracks and areas for freestyle.

So maybe AI Drone could be a sim (the only one?) For those who like cruising and long range flying?

Unreal Engine 4.

Importing user-created maps in Unreal directly to the sim is in the roadmap for this winter. I need to figure a few things out but this seems 100% doable, and quite a few people actually want this !
The pipeline would be something like :
- make a map in unreal editor (good version), witch is free.
- package it to a file with the good settings.
- copy/paste this file on the content/paks folder of the game
- profit !

The new map is huge but only city, no landscape :

WOW, that map looks very cool.... I got the sim, so now I have to get it updated. Haven't spent much time in the sims lately, but that has been because I have been able to fly for real. Winter is coming though.

Wouldn't less drag cause it to float more?
