How are you doing the update? You need get the bootloader updated. The easiest way to do that is to flash your X9D+ via a USB cable.
Make sure the X9D+ is completely switched off.
Connect a USB cable from your computer to the X9D+. This will cause the X9D+ to go into DFU boot mode.
Fire up OpenTX Companion 2.3.15 on your computer.
Make sure you've created a radio profile in OpenTX Companion for your X9D+ (Settings menu -> Radio Profiles)
Make sure that the radio profile for your X9D+ is selected (Settings menu -> Radio Profiles)
Make sure the correct build options are set for the selected X9D+ Profile (Click on the Gear Wheel button at the top which is 8 buttons from the left):
Tick "noheli" if you don't fly helis.
Tick "lua" to enable LUA scripts to be run.
Leave all the other options unticked.
Click on the Download button at the top (7 buttons from the left) and then click the "Download Firmware" button to download the latest firmware file.
Click on the "Write Firmware to Radio" button on the left (3rd button from the bottom).
Doing the above will update BOTH the bootloader and the main OpenTX firmware on your X9D+ at the same time. Once you have done that you will need to update your SD Card with the OpenTX 2.3.15 contents by deleting everything on it and then copying the 2.3.15 contents to it. Make sure you take a copy/backup of the the existing contents on the card to your computer first. If you get stuck with that just shout and I will try and walk you through it.
EDIT: Go to time position 9:59 in JB's video linked to below. That demonstrates the flashing process using DFU mode that I described above. It's shown done using a RadioMaster TX16S but the procedure and outcome is exactly the same on an X9D+...

Hahahaha funny you posted this.. I tried multiple ways to do this.. (Tweerfpv, Titianfpv AND even as far as Bluefacoln)…and I always seem to revert back to good ole’ JB.. I have watched this several times, even made a step by step.. .. continually getting “can not upload firmware … (unknown reason)”.. I believe I encountered this when I first updated OpenTX years ago.. and THINK I updated in bootloader (the last option JB used)… During all this I LOOKED REAL GOOD at my files on the SD and Taranis .. and noticed a “FIRMWARES” folder.. along with FIRMWARE… it made me think about this controller I purchased (second hand)… MAYBE changes were made by the previous owner.. this would explain why I have to remap TAER, AETR, ect on every new FC I install… I’ve only had 5mins here, 5 mins there to even deal with this issue over the past week.. But I do believe JBs last option should cure my issue.. Thanks for the video reminder ..I’m gonna TRY to play with it tomorrow.. if not I’m off on Wednesday.. I should be able to sit down and knock this out..
Got home, grabbed the controller… plugged it in.. open txt companion… loaded the file..it was easy to identify.. it only said OPENtx. 3.5.15.bin, I had removed characters thinking this may have been a issue. Installed, booted up, “eprom error”.. turned on.. “battery error”, SDCARD ERROR.. BUT showed opentx 3.5.13.. so it’s installed.. This morning. I looked, all the models are there.. and bound.. and not eprom error..now to load the new sd card contents ..install edgeTX, update THAT.. THEN, ELRS… “How do you eat and elephant?… one bite at a time..”
See, it's not actually too difficult once you figure out what actually needs to be done Only a few more hurdles left to go and then you will be back in 2024 with the latest firmware on your trusty X9D+ workhorse
Some other things to be aware of when moving to EdgeTX are detailed in the post linked to below which is worth reading in case you end up with some the same issues I faced so you will know how to resolve them...
Much appreciated! Thanks again.. .. will I continually “update”.. maybe not at first.. I’ll let all the bugs get worked out… THEN, I may force myself to keep from this happening again..

Well … almost there.. I was getting ready to “suck start my gun”.. apparently there is a thousand and one ways to go from open tx to edgeTX and not all “work” .. I watched THIS video, THAT video .. remove SD card, enter bootloader .. use stm32 bootloader.. opentx companion, edgeTX companion, back this up, back THAT up… None of it worked on my setup .. so I hit the edge tx GitHub, did a little reading and discoverd edgeTX BUDDY.. and it was as easy as pie. First loaded checked, all good then updated . no joke.. we’ll I say that .. my audio still says “Welcome to OPEN TX”.. but my models are there.. and they are bound. Now, ELRS configurator.. my Taranis is not listed in the targets for install.. Time to go back to the Google machine ..

DUMB ASS!!!!! I just realized... its NOT going to be listed....WHY!!!???? BECAUSE IM NOT LOADING IT ON THE TARANIS!!! I HAVE A MODULE!!!!! FPV just adding more and more to the "learning curve"...I can easily see why people continually just say "EFF IT!"

Hmmm.....the handset such as Taranis takes an operating system to operate. The operating systems will be called things like OpenTx or EdgeTx for those open source operating systems. Then you have names like Ethos for closed source operating systems for brand like FrSky.
The module takes firmware dedicated to operating the RF signals. You have firmware such as names like ACCST V1 and 2 or ACCeSS for FrSky. If you are using a FrSky external or internal module that's about it. Then you can also add a different external module such as the multi module 4 in 1 which has over 70 different RF signal protocols. There are also Spektrum modules and Lemon modules.
So the question is which area of the radio control system are you trying to update the firmware.
This has nothing to do with FPV yet.
With FPV you have firmware for either the analog system or the digital system.
I just spent the morning updating the Walksnail firmware on all my digital quads, the fat shark HD goggles and I am working on the Walksnail VRX. They are all a PITA.

You need to delete all the existing files from your SD Card (after taking a backup to a folder on your computer) because it will still contain some or all of the original OpenTX SD Card contents, and then copy the EdgeTX SD Card Contents to the empty SD Card. You can find the SD Card Contents for EdgeTX 2.9.x at the link below. You need to download the bw212x64.zip file for an FrSky Taranis X9D...
Once you've done that you will then have the correct sound files including the one for "Welcome to EdgeTX". Don't forget to also add the latest versions of the ExpressLRS LUA script and the TBS Agent Lite script to the \SCRIPTS\TOOLS folder on the SD Card because they don't come as part of the EdgeTX SD Card Contents. You can find links below for those...

Snow, thanks for the “steps” information … I couldn’t have gotten through all this mess without that information .. Much appreciated!! I will get that controller "cleaned up" and not fall back into "technical debt". One thing this thread has helped me with is READING, meaning I am a visual learner. I have the propensity to "skim over" things and not grasp things fully, usually just enough to get me in trouble. Ive always had a rough time absorbing / retaining from written text. Hence me bouncing video to video. I forced myself to go to the github pages and just look at the "instructions", those pages were always intimidating to me. they were fairly user friendly. and I learned a lot, things started to 'click'. And Snow, with what you posted, I wasnt going in blind...again , thanks it helped immensely
Investing the time and effort to do that has now brought your X9D into the modern age and has saved you from unnecessarily spending $160+ on another transmitter when you didn't need to. That money can now be better put towards other things
Long live the FrSky Taranis X9D. It will never die

NOPE! Not gonna let this happen again.. FWIW, edgeTX buddy was simple and easy.. and my sounds changed without me doing the sd card .. must be part of the new firmware.. Correction... it still says welcome to Open TX... ill get that corrected. But I did loose my crossfire rx bind
