Micro JST/Molex Connector Crimping Tool Recommendations?
#1
I've decided it's probably about time I kitted myself out with a selection of micro connectors and a compatible crimping tool that will cover pretty much all of the micro JST/Molex connectors used for the flight electronics on our quads from 1.0mm up to 2.5mm as shown in Oscar's following post...

https://intofpv.com/t-tiny-jst-connectors-diagrams

The Engineer PA-09 (HERE), PA-20 (HERE) and PA-21 (HERE) look to be decent quality, however to cover all the sizes I want would require the purchase of at least two of those pairs at $40-50 each, and they're not even ratchet driven. I find the ratchet type always seem to do a better job because they consistently apply the correct crimping pressure until release.

I've seen some cheapish ratchet crimps with interchangeable dies for around $25 which look like they cover everything but I always worry about the quality of something that cheap. An example of some of those are HERE.

If anyone has any particular recommendations or endorsements of a crimping tool they use that fits my requirements, then can you please let me know which one(s) you use.

Hi Snow
I have 2  IWiss crimpers one is SN-28B which is for larger connectors it is the ratchet type and works very well.
I needed a set for smaller connectors and was happy with the IWiss quality so looked there first, I ended up with a basic style ( no ratchet ) but for the little connectors it is fine. It's number is IWS-2820M and it was only about $15 if I remember correctly. I got it on Amazon.
The smallest set works for JST-SH. These are single crimp so you have to do the wire and insulation separately, I think it gives more control

I Found it

I have two IWISS crimpers. Both works great. It is nicer to actually have two crimpers rather than changing the die all the time.

Thanks guys.

Typically the IWISS gear seems to be sold at rip-off prices in the UK. Probably because it's imported. I've found what look like clones of the same but I need to be sure that it's not some cheap knock-off tat that will fall apart after 5 minutes of use, so I'll check out some reviews.

I can tell you that the ones I got were fulfilled by Amazon and they are quality.

Here is a good article I just read today on crimping http://tech.mattmillman.com/info/crimpconnectors/ and all the different types of connectors and their "official" crimpers.

Yeah. We get screwed in the UK. As an example, this is the same branded IWISS SN-28B on the Amazon UK website as are selling for $23 on the US Amazon website...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B017JU20Z6

£44 delivered, which converted to US currency works out at almost $60 USD Rolleyes

Alternatively I can get branded IWISS ones from China for $23 delivered but I would have to wait ~4 weeks for them...

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/SN-28B-c...66039.html

Some cheaper "clones" of the same are here...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...rds=SN-28B

To be fair, some of them do seem to get OK reviews.

I see what you mean. The Engineer crimpers look attractive considering the alternative.

Just a quick update to this. I still don't have a pair of crimps, but Andreas just posted a very useful comparison between the IWISS IWS-2820M and Engineer PA-09 crimps on his YouTube channel which might be useful for others who are also considering getting a pair.

Spoiler alert: The IWISS come out as the winner. I can get those in the UK from Amazon for 15 GBP (~$18) delivered. This compares to 40 GBP (~$48) for the PA-09. So getting a pair of the IWISS over the PA-09 is a no-brainer.

I tried pushing the 2820M on you back in post 2. I have been using mine for a couple of years now and I'm very happy with them. Thumbs Up

Thanks Scott. I guess I should have just taken your advice in the first place Big Grin I ordered a pair this morning shortly after posting Andreas' video. They should be with me by Thursday. Now I just need to get a selection of JST connectors to use with them Smile

I think I have been recommending the IWISS for a while to you too.

It's only when you see actual visual comparative proof that you then believe a $18 tool really is just as good or better than a $48 tool Big Grin

I like the IWS-3220M for micro connector. Because it ratchet, you can hold the connector and thread the wire easier.

We can't get those in the UK, so I have to settle for the poor man's version without a ratchet.
