Audio in simulators
#1
Question
I'm new to the hobby! Question: Does any simulator sound like actually piloting out in the field?

I was in Liftoff for the first time, attempting to learn to fly acro.  I kept getting annoyed by the fact that I heard the rotors at the same volume, no matter how far away I flew.  I don't think in the real world I'd have a microphone on the quad copter letting me hear what the rotors sound like in headphones.  Right?  But that seems to be what the sound sounds like in the simulator.   Wouldn't it be nice if the volume increased and decreased based on distance away, and better yet, simulated the Doppler effect when flying past your virtual body?

They've made such great efforts to make the virtual goggles look realistic, adding noise as you fly away.  Seems like similar efforts for sound would be cool too.

why would you like simulating the distance between pilot and quad, that seems a downside to me, or a benefit from the simulator.

in real flight, the sound has delay... there is much latency, headphones on the goggle does make the latency fixed to a level. the sound from a microphone on a quad is trash, so much wind noise.
others like it but i see no need for the sound, regardless enjoy it as art :-)

I didn't think about the latency. That is interesting. Once I get good enough on the simulator, I guess I will experience how the real sounds are. As a musician with more sensitive ears, sounds are just as important to me as the visuals, which is why I wanted the realism.

I don't know what quads you're intending on flying, but if they are analogue then you can just fit an onboard microphone and use an earbud plugged into your goggles. Then you get real-time audio with no latency or reduction in volume just like in the simulator. Otherwise it's quite a interesting experience doing a punch-out or some high powered acro manoeuvres with a real quad that is 500 metres away and it then taking a second or so delay for the noise of the motors to reach your ears after the manoeuvre has already been completed in your video feed Big Grin
