XSR wont bind to QX7
#1
Hi,

I really need some help.  I'm at the final stage of building a Chameleon and I cant get the tx and rx setup.  I bought a Taranis QX7 and an XSR rx - both packages are labelled "EU LBT" as i'm in the UK.

I have installed Open TX 2.2 on the Taranis and selected EU when flashing firmware.  On my first attempt to bind I had the tx in bind mode (chirping) and held down the button on the XSR and applied USB to the FC (BFF3).  I get 2 solid LEDs on the rx.  I tried several times but no luck.  I have D16 selected in the model setup.

I thought maybe the XSR firmware was wrong, so plugged in to the s-port on the QX7 and flashed with version 151118 from the FrSky website.  I used the LBT firmware file, not the non EU one.

Again trying to bind and I get 2 solid LEDs no matter how long I hold the button.  After removing power and re-applying I just get a single red flashing led on the rx.

I then did some searching on internet to see if this was a common problem which it seems it is, although normally down to incompatible firmware between tx and rx.

So, I flashed the QX7 internal module with the XJT-LBT build 151223 from FrSky site.  Again I cannot get them to bind. Huh

I would greatly appreciate some advice as I really want to get this bird in the air.

Many thanks

Normally i do first put the RX in bind mode and then let the TX search for devices in bind mode, maybe you can try this.

I don't have an OpenTX radio, but on my Devo radios running DeviationTX, there's a setting for the FrSky D16 protocol where you can perform a fine adjustment of the frequency that the radio is using.

Until I changed that setting, I couldn't bind to my XSR receiver either.

I'd suspect that there is a similar adjustment available in OpenTX.

Thanks guys - i've tried that but no luck so far.

Going to have to call it a day now, i've tried for hours to get this working.  I've flashed and re-flashed both tx and rx and i'm pretty certain i'm on the right firmware for both.  It could be either the tx or rx are faulty - I have no way to test as my other quad is Flysky, this was my first FrSky setup.  Hoping it is not the tx that is broke  Sad

Such a shame the quad is 99% built just need to get this done!!

Will try again in the morning.

Get some distance between RX and TX while binding...

Why did you not Flash 161214 on the XJT? Works on my Taranis with XSR (151118)...

Thanks Mephi will try that in the morning. I had the tx and rx right next to each other on the bench. I will also try the firmware suggested.

It's so frustrating having the build this close to finished and not being able to go any further. And to top it off we're supposed to have great weather here in rainy Manchester tomorrow lol. Oh well haha

Ok so I thought this was the version I had flashed to internal module, but I had that many on the SD card that I must have done something else.  I flashed this version and bingo it worked!!

Thank you ever so much for the post, I would have been scratching my head all day again if this hadn't prompted me to check.  Thank you all for your help.  Thumbs Up

I'm in the USA and ordered a Q X7 and 5 XM+ receivers.... Will I need to do anything special to bind to them or should they be good to go out the box?

If you buy them also in the USA and they are not marked as EU then you are good to go, maybe update the Q X7 and the receivers, but that isn't necessary to bind.

Hi.
I copy my post from another blog here, as it should help people here!

I've recently bought a non-US QX7 (2017/06), and an EU XSR. It has been hard to bind, as I faced several different issues.

I first noticed these prerequisites (for me) to flash RX (XSR) from TX (QX7):

- the smarport of the QX7 (near the SD card slot) must be used to flash RX firmware if openTX 2.2 newer than 2017/02/13 (backside pins won't work : I had a 2017/02/23 version). Take care that pinout is different : from left to right GND +5V SIG (with SIG closest to SD Card slot)

- inverse : only the backside pins work with X7 Firmware (openTX 2.2) from 2017/02/13 (and maybe older ones) : 3 pins from bottom of RX to top : SIG GND +5V

I've tried all firmwares from frSky site (EU/non-EU) for both the XSR and the QX7; impossible to bind RX and TX in non EU firmwares, here the only pair which worked for me (and permit to bind TX/RX) :

- SD Card version 2.2V0006
- FIRMWARE-X7_170213 (flash bootloader then reboot in bootloader mode to install it)
- XJT_LBT_build151223
- XSR_LBT_build151118.frk  (flashed on XSR) *FIRST*  *THEN* XSRLBT170619.frk (which binds).

I followed these steps :
- flash X7 firmware to 170213 : flash bootloader, reboot TX in bootloader mode then install it
- install XJT_LBT_build151223 : flash on internal module then reboot
- flash XSR_LBT_build151118.frk on external device (XSR) with backside pins
- try to bind with error, but no more both green/red solid leds, I had instead  to a quick flashing red one
- flash XSRLBT170619.frk on external device (XSR) with backside pins
- bind TX/RX normally : put TX in bind mode, boot XSR in bind mode, unplug the battery, exit bind mode on TX, then plug the battery

Hope this helps, I wasted a while on that :-)
