Why did my motor go up in smoke?
#1
I was adjusting PIDs and after an adjustment, motor 1 wouldn't spin up.  Turned out to be a classic case of a pinched wire between the PDB and ESC.  Replaced the wire and tested the motor in the tab. As soon as it started to spin up, it let out a nice cloud of magic smoke. Motor's toast.  The only thing I can think of is the fact that I'm using caps on the ESC's, but I didn't bother to put one back on motor 1 before I tested it. So the question for the electronics gurus here, is this what caused the motor burning up or should I be looking for another cause?  The only other thing I did difference was I use 22 gauge wire, but I didn't have any left  so I used 18 guage to replace the pinched wire.

A motor is only going to smoke if there is lots of current flowing through the motor.

A motor that can't spin because it's physically unable to or an ESC that has blown and turns on one of the phases at full power or a short circuit in the motor would be the likely causes.

If you had a pinched wire, maybe you blew up the ESC?

Thanks Unseen, I'm going to replace the motor and ESC just to be sure. But it may be a bit, I've got some work to do on my Tarot 650. Totally pilot error, but it dropped out of the sky from about 200'. Luckily the retracts were extended and it landed flat on it's belly in fairly long grass and no expensive components were damaged. Oh well, part of the hobby I suppose.......
