what is "flash ESC"?

Sorry it might sound silly, but what does it mean to flash an ESC? 

And can it be done after the quadcopter has been built? my first build I put it all together plugged the cc3d into librepilot and I was flying
I have new esc's on the way from banggood I think they are racestar

It means to update the firmware. Blheli is one firmware for example.
They constantly bring out new updates to make the product better. Some you can flash direct plugged into the flight controller, some ESC might need to use a flash USB adapter.

For the software just google "BLHeli" and it should take you to their wordpress site. The software also come with the latest ESC firmware. If you youtube 'flash blheli' there will be a few vids showing how to use the software and how to flash. Sorry, i just dont want to repeat all of the instructions when its in a video on youtube. You don't have to flash anything to the ESC's they will probably work fine without any problems. This is simple but don't need to worry about it if you are beginner.
