What is a good entry level Transmitter for about $100
#1
I want to build my first quad and have read through many of the boards and posts.  I would like to get an entry level transmitter that I can grow into, use on a practice quad or use as a companion for a 2nd quad when I get a Taranis down the road.  I would like something that functions well and hopefully is flexible in matching it to different receivers.

I am open to other suggestions but I am considering:

1.  Quanum i8 8ch 2.4GHZ AFHDS 2A Digital Proportional Radio System Mode 2 (Black)  $59

2.  Turnigy 9x/9XR Pro Radio   $70

3.  FlySky 9X with DJT transmitter module $90

4.  Walkera Devo 7?

Is any one of these more  up to date (or lacking) in being compatible with new components that it will have match up to?

or . . .  is there just not a lot of value in the lower end transmitters - am I wasting my time and money on a lower end transmitter?

As a side item, are there any common cables or connectors I should stock up for building a quad if I can get them at a good price?  https://store.3dr.com/t/clearance

Thanks for all of the effort put into this board - I am benefitting from it greatly.  The way information is laid out for people wanting to start out is fantastic.  I am learning a lot here and on http://blog.oscarliang.net/

I only have experience with Turnigy 9x. It's more than good enough for a novice pilot. It's also very easy to mod. Get the LED and frsky module and you're set. There's tutorials in Oscar's blog.

I think if I was to change my rx, I'd go for a taranis or futaba.

Yea I would probably go for the 9X if you don't mind doing some Mod yourself...

flashing it with ER9X or OpenTX firmware
install backlight
swap out the stock TX module with a Frsky one (DJT perhaps)
install a transmitter 3S lipo for longer battery life

and you get yourself a cheap Taranis Big Grin LOL

I Got to agree with Sid, it's a good long term investment getting a Taranis Smile

I've got a Spektrum DX5e. I (basically) won it, but now that I have a few months of flight time I can see why it makes sense to buy a more expensive transmitter from the outset. I'm already feeling its limitations in many ways, both in the features (5ch doesn't allow for in-flight PID tuning, stick arming/flight modes/other settings are limited, no telemetry...) and in its precision (the stick center wanders around more than I'd like).

I know this one wasn't on your list to consider, but I think it's a good argument for buying the right one once.

If you're not serious about the sub-$100 requirement, Taranis is a no-brainer!
