Video processing workflow
#1
Hi, not going to post any flight video (yet) but instead asking a question.

So I have a 3-inch Acrobrat with Tarsier V2, and recording in 1080p/60fps which gives me a decent raw video quality. But the video file size is just huge - 3 gig for 10 minutes, while an hour of full HD 1080p tv show would be the same size. But this is due to absence of compression, which is impossible to pack into a flight recording device.

So I'm stuck what to do next with this. The raw video file plays great in the default windows player, but when I try to open it in the video processing software (i'm using VSDC) it just doesn't play smooth, probably due to file size or my PC being just slow.

Do I need to convert the raw video(s) into a more usable compressed format, and then process them in VSDC or Davinci or any other software? Do I need to open the raw file in the video processing software anyway, create the video and then compress it?

When converting and processing video, what conversion settings should I use - I mean which codec, container, bitrate, any other critical settings? There's so many of them. Tried to compress using VLC to a smaller bitrate, but the result is just awful. Maybe there is some better compression tool and some generic settings giving a good balance of size and quality?

I want to end up with a general purpose video file, 720p or 1080p, 60 (maybe 30?) fps, to share, watch on TV, PC or youtube.

Thanks!

I am no expert in this but I was playing around with some of this stuff a few months ago and eventually decided it was too much work Smile

Handbrake is really helpful in encoding videos and has some good presets: https://handbrake.fr/

Another recent development to check out is GyroFlow: https://github.com/ElvinC/gyroflow

Gyroflow can help stabilize the dvr footage using gyro data from blackbox logs and has some additional options for removing lens distortion and also non-linear stretching.

Although Gyroflow is still in the alpha phase and not a very mature product, there have been some good videos posted on youtube. Gyroflow also has camera calibration presets on github for several cameras.

All of this is free Smile

The problem I faced with Divinci or VSDC during my google based research was that most of the forums were geared towards high quality action cams and gopros and so even finding info on processing footage from camera's/dvr's used in the FPV world is non existent. I then realized why most professional youtuber's prefer gopros, because there is so much video editing community support/tutorials/utilities available compared to other action cameras.

Regarding the video stuttering during playback, try turning off hardware acceleration if there's an option for that in the settings of any video playback/editing software that you're using. I was getting the same issue with footage from my RunCam 5 and switching off hardware acceleration completely eliminated any stuttering when playing back the footage on my computer.

OK thanks, going to give a try to Handbrake and then process with VSDC since I'm a little used to it.

Honestly I don't see a reason why everything is gopro-oriented as you Kafie say, finally a video footage is just a video footage whether it comes from a gopro or from goggles dvr, and  a video software is just a tool to process it, as long as the footage is any standard format.

Agree, all video footage should be treated equally regardless of the source. But processing the footage depends highly on understanding what the camera is doing to it before it is saved to a file. Various cameras treat natural colors differently, the horizon/edges will have distortion depending on the camera lens, stabilization is handled differently in different cameras, recoding modes in cameras whether it is 4:3 or 16:9 or even a 30 or 60 fps or pal or ntsc are not following standards. Understanding such differences and then spending time fixing these requires a fair bit of trial and error. Using a commonly or widely used camera helps work through these challenges as a community and for the more common fpv pilot we have a lot more to worry about: maintaining our rigs, go out flying, etc etc, that spending hours fixing footage and then realizing one workflow for one camera does not work on another camera’s footage just makes it that much a pita.
