Ummagawd Remix 5" Build
#16
Got some more parts in and last night managed to flash the R-XSR with the Fport firmware. Pretty easy actually using the supplies cable that plugs right into the QX7.

On the Remix frame, the receiver is mounted in this little dug out area under the FC/ESC stack. I made the mistake of sticking on the battery/frame sticky pad which covers the hole for pushing the rx bind button. I don't want to try and unstick it so i need to bind the rx before i install it in the frame. The rx only needs power to bind, right? I need to figure out the easiest way to give it 5V. It's spec say 3.5-10V so maybe i'll just stick the wires in a battery plug. A HV 1S whoop battery should do it.

A HV 1S whoop battery did the trick. Turns out the wires fit perfectly into the connector hole and were pretty secure.

In terms of using f.port, should it work with any UART that is said to work with s.port?

In this diagram would i just connect it to TX4 as it shows s.port going there?

Thanks

Plagiarized from another site:

connect wire from non-inverted SmartPort pad (negated P on R-XSR receiver board) to TX pad on available FC serial port (TX3, TX4, TX6). Enable Serial RX for this serial port (If you connected to TX3, enable UART3). Then switch non-inverted F.Port on in
CLI

Code:
set serialrx_provider = FPORT
set serialrx_halfduplex = ON
set serialrx_inverted = OFF
save

Yeh, i read a bunch on it, but i can't tell what UARTS on my FC have inverters or not. Since SPort is inverted (is that right?) then i assume its a safe bet for Fport? I need to figure it out for my FC based on how they use UARTs in that diagram.

Some people are also using the uninverted pad on the receiver instead of the main inverted receiver connector pin. I'm not sure how to know if i need to do that or not based on my FC.

would maybe start with UART tx3 and see if that works.

Since we don't know if TX4 has hardware inversion, it is best just to use another available UART TX. Once you have it working, maybe you can test TX4. There is also a chance you get RC control but not telemetry or vice versa. If all your settings is correct, that means your UART doesn't support bidirectional communication. I have a theory that if this happens, you can bridge RX to TX to get bidirectional. Only theory, I haven't tested it yet. All my FC has bidirectional UARTs.

Using the inverted output of the R-XSR iw as able to get the rx working but not telemetry. I ended up having to use the "hacked" uninverted output running to TX4 which is the "S.Port" pad on the FC. That plus some of the CLI commands (i think turning on halfduplex was what it needed) got it all working, rx and telemetry.

I got this thing pretty much all built up except that i still need a cam. I'll prob stop by a local shop tomorrow to get one. All in all this frame is sort of a pain in the ass. There's a lot of parts that get buried and can't later be accessed. There isn't a ton of room for FC stack height so i had to put extra nuts under the screw heads to pull them out a bit to effectively shorten them. I also kind of screwed up the XT60 pigtail, it won't reach the battery in any sensible orientation since i cut it too short for use with the little plug holder clip. So i removed the clip for now. I'll get a new pigtail or some connectors at the shop tomorrow. Once its done it should be pretty solid, though.

Betaflight and BLHeli are configured as well. Should be pretty ready to go softwarewise.

Crazy thunderstorms today so i haven't actually flown it yet... but it *should* work. Smile

Not my best wiring work, but honestly i got a little impatient with it. I need to figure out how i want to orient the battery and rerun a XT60 pigtail accordingly. Ummagawd runs the battery sideways.  Confused

Thanks. The weather was good today so i was able to very slowly hover it around my small backyard. It works! I plan to really fly it this weekend.

I finally got a chance to fly this thing. This is my first time flying a 5" and i'm pretty new at this in general. The result was pretty thorough abuse of the frame. hah I ejected a battery once, hit a metal sign post once, crashed onto asphalt once, and lots of crashes into grass. It took it all just fine, even the props.

The biggest issue i had was that i forgot to enable the IRC Tramp telemetry so the OSD control of the VTX wasn't working. I wasn't able to run it on the band in normally use and things seemed much blurrier. It might have been on some band my goggles couldn't quite lock into. I had trouble seeing what i was doing half the time. It was fun, though. It's quite fast and i had trouble keeping the ballooning down. I felt like i rarely crossed 50% throttle all day. I like the weightier feel of the 5" and how it drops faster. I also flew the 2.5" Eclair a bit and its definitely easier to fly in tight spaces, but it does feel a little floatier and more easily pushed around by the wind.

I've got a lot of practicing to do!
