I know this is a bit of a bump, but I just had to come in again with business names... What is it with people who insist on misspelling the name of their business!? I was about 6 when I first got irritated by the Kwality Food Store, that we passed on my walk to school in London. It seems to be even more common here in South Africa. I heard my mother-in-law on a sales call to a prospective client the other day, she said.
"...you can see the website for more info, its clean sleep .co.za, that's clean with a 'K'..."
But it is actually K-L-E-E-N   Doh

There is also the Rendezvous Shopping Centre / Center Mall(!) in the middle of town, Rendezvous spelled Rondevoux, a friend of mine is the manager of a cocktail bar in there, I cannot pass it without having to suppress the urge to order a Molotov!

I think that in some cases, it's not an intentional misspelling, it's actually because nobody noticed it was wrong until it was too late to do anything about it!

On the subject of British and American English, I noticed that Mr. Bardwell recently posted a justification for Americans calling it 'sodder' instead of 'solder'.

All good and well, but I know how 'soldier' is pronounced on both sides of the Atlantic...

You have to love English - a language with more exceptions than rules and little in the way of consistency! Thanks to Mr. Webster, spelling is something that has gone from 'tricky' to 'next to impossible'. You would think that all these things would count against the language becoming the lingua franca of the planet, but far from it.

Maybe the fact that it's almost impossible to define what 'correct' English actually is helps! Even if you murder the language as a non native speaker, being understood is always possible.

Honestly... I pronounce it "saw-dur"... It's how I knew the word to be pronounced long before I knew the spelling. At the same time when I hear it said "sol-dur" or "soldeer" I tend to just kinda hear it like it was the same thing. Of course I grew up in Las Vegas where the accent... is all of them :p I am somewhat oblivious to different accents lol...

London is pretty similar on that front, accents from everywhere.
South Africa is just hilarious though, the way the vowels get twisted over here makes for some classic misunderstandings.
My wife and I were at her folks and had a couple of drinks because her sister was visiting, so we stayed over rather than drive home. My wife's brother Jeff, has his own place on their property, it has a small veranda with a single sleeper couch.  So my wife was going to share a double with her sis, so her mum, twisting the pronunciation of the 'e' in deck, suggested
"Tom can sleep outside on Jeff's dick!"
