Turnigy 9X and PPM Compatible receiver
#1
Hello everyone, new to the hobbey and attempting to build out my first quad.

I am trying to find a radio receiver that is compatable with my Turnigy 9X stock transmitter that is capable of PPM. The FC i bought (Betaflight F3) does not have the servo inputs and requires a single wire connection. It seems like there are a few options:

1. Most popular (well documented) option is to throw out the base Tx and get a Frsky JR combo

2. Flysky Rx that has PPM

3. Worse case, servo to PPM

None of these seem ideal as 1. Combo is literally more expensive than the radio. 2. introduces obvious lag in the control loop, and 3. does not say it is explicitly compatible with the base 9X Rf module

Is it worth it to upgrade to the FrSky combo even though the cost is kind of high, should I get the Flysky Rx, or am I so lost in the woods need a new approach.

Thanks for the help.

If you want a faster connection than PPM (and you won't notice if you're a beginner), you can connect the receiver you linked in point 2 via iBus instead of PPM and get all the speed of a serial connection.

FlySky receivers have really good range, so there's no real need for you to upgrade to the FrSky compatible module.

Not a lot of options with the stock module. I can't think of any receiver that would do PPM. If you are going to buy Frsky, just buy the module and buy either a XSR or X4R. Don't buy the combo you linked. The X8R is too big especially for mini quad.

If I was in your shoe, I probably buy something like the Taranis Q X7. It is more modern and you will have more support and options. Only about $110 and you can move to serial communication. Or buy a Flysky TX, only about $50-60. About the same price as a Frsky module.

Thank you for the responses,

I'll give a few things a try starting with the PPM as it is the cheapest. If that doesn't work I'll probably try a new module, splitting them up and not buying the combo is cheaper and the parts are smaller, good call.

@voodoo I already own the 9X so buying the Q X7 is not going to work

Ill post results in a few days!

Update:
Hobby king had delayed my order on the turnigy 9x so I decided to cancel and upgrade to the Taranis Q X7 and the x4r

Everything works perfectly and the serial bus worked great with the Betalflight F3. I'd highly recommend the X7 anyone serious about getting started

A quick fix for anyone looking for a solution is one of these from Hobby King.  PWM to cPPM or S-Bus. They work perfectly for around $10
