Trouble tuning a Falcon 185
#1
More of a chance to learn here than anything else because the final tune works out ok.

I've been using this method to tune:

Code:
Tuning:

Start at:
        P    I    D
Roll    40    0    0
Pitch    40    0    0
Yaw        90    45    -

- Give sharp inputs on Roll and Pitch.  Looking for it to bounce 2-3 times after sharp inputs.  Raise P until true.

- Raise D until no bounce after sharp inputs.

Tune I:
- Set 20 on Pitch and Roll I
- Hover, then bounce up and down.  If quad drifts, adjust I on that axis.

FPV tune after:
- Sharp movements should not have bounceback --> Raise D
- If punchout dips in any direction --> Raise I

It has worked pretty well on the 2 quads I did it on previously, but now I've have 2 other quads cause trouble.

First is a Falcon 185 on Flip32.  When adjusting the P on Roll to get "2-3 bounces" I noticed that at 50 it was still bouncing too much.  At 55 it was slightly better, but still too much.  At 60 it was much worse.
So what do you do in that situation?  At no point was I able to get it to "2-3 bounces" on the Roll axis.
Luckily with enough D it is completely flyable, if not perfect.

The second problem quad is my brother-in-law's new cheapo kit that came with an SPRacing F3 clone.  I did the same tune process to it and it mostly worked, although at one point by upping D, the quad gained a little shimmy when it got hit by wind.
Also, no matter how much I we put in place, the quad constantly drifts to the right and forward.  Whether in Acro or Angle mode.  Is this just from his cheapo clone FC?

If it drifts in acro it's either
- Tx not trimmed well enough (not exactly 1500)
- If channels in rx tab fluctuate a lot you might need to add a little deadband
- Noise/vibrations irritating the gyro
- too low i-term

Those "old" guides for adjusting PID imho don't work well anymore with the fast looptimes/gear we run nowadays... P-term oscillations can be so fast you can hardly see them by eye. A log file can help though.

PS: if with P at 50 it bounces too much, i'd say P is already on the high side... Maybe try lower too, around 45.
