The Lessons I've learned building quads
#1
Well not quite learned - since I'm still making same mistakes. Smile

I currently have a graveyard full of broken AIO FC waiting to be resurrected...
https://intofpv.com/t-need-help-fixing-b...ifying-smd

This list is mostly for toothpick AIO FC quads:

1. Little crash like drop 2m on grass - maybe a bent prop.
Big crash like 20m+ drop. Disconnect Lipo immediately.
Dont be tempted to "try it" and arm it - take it home disassemble and check for damage first.
Recently a little frayed loose LED wire  fried my FC.

2. How to mitigate crashes? Usually failsafe because went behind a hill or other obstruction.
Be more mindfull. Recently I'm too reckless, basically assuming ELRS will magically conquer all.

3. Always record in goggles. This may be last clue where to search drone 1km+ away.

4. Your build quality. Its the little touches. Heatshrink on exposed wires. Black electrical tape to hold things down.
This can make or break you, and prevent a little crash turning into a $90 fried FC.

Couple things to add that I’ve learned:

5. Learn to be quick on disarm when you know you can’t recover. I rest my finger on the disarm switch. Disarming right before you hit that grass/tree/whatever can save a motor or esc from burning out. Only takes a moment of a motor not being able to spin to do bad things.

6. If something seems odd- land and figure it out. Getting a weird shake that wasn’t there before? Land, maybe you’ve got a bad prop, a loose screw, or a hairline crack on an arm. Getting video interference or bad signal where you don’t typically? Land and check it out. Stopping for a moment to identify and fix something is much better than losing video mid flight, having to spend an hour searching for your quad, and if you find it, finding out that you destroyed something when it plummeted back to earth.

7. If something is frustrating you on a build, walk away for a minute and come back with a clear head.
Dangerous operations.

Disclaimer: I don’t know wtf I’m talking about.
I wish I could get the smell of burnt electronics out of my nose.

#5 and #7 are very important lessons.
Although nowadays, especially when trying to hit playground gaps after a loop, I disarm even when I probably could have made it.

But then I get complacent and smash camera on a pole.

#7 happened to me last night. Could not figure out some seemingly simple pinio mapping. Slept on it and woke up knowing what I was doing wrong.
