The Future of Analog/Digital
#1
With the uptick in the demand to switch to digital coming after DJI released its new firmware pushing their goggles to transmit @ 50mb/s what do you think this means for the analog world and the future of the digital world?

I’ve seen so much buzz around switching to digital. People are selling their goggles left and right and some of them are plainly stating “I’m upgrading to digital so I won’t need these anymore”. What do you think this will do to the price of goggles both analog and digital? Are there any other competitors to DJI in the digital world yet? Or do they still have the market cornered?

Personally I’m hoping that the price for a digital setup starts to drop as I’m not down to dump — what is it? Like $750+? — on goggles and vtx. The price tag of my Hd3’s was enough to raise my wife’s eyebrows haha!

On the consumer side, things seems to be heading to digital. But as you noted, the price of entry is high. The price of top shelf analog is just as high. Analog will still exist because there are still a lot of people entering this hobby and do not want to pay so much fearing that they would not like the hobby.

I think on the race competition, analog is a must and the way to go. Because the digital signal pretty much wipe out any analog signal, you can't have 8 racers at the same time. At 50mb/s, you can really only have 3 racers. The latency is still enough that pro racers are not going to use digital.

DJI pretty much is the only game in town. There a short moment for the Byte Frost, but that was pretty much beta and we haven't heard much from them. There is also rumors that ORQA is developing something.

The price of good analog will likely stay where it is. Good quality slim style goggles are expensive to build. Probably one reason DJI decided to use box style instead.

I am hoping to see DJI FPV version 2. Cross my fingers for a slim style. If they release it, I might jump into the game. For now, I am still happy with analog. And I know others feel the same.

I agree with VooDoo.  For all that digital is, it falls short in a number of areas, like racing, price, and even long range.  So analog will be around for quite sometime.  Frankly, we have more to worry about changing the hobby through draconian laws than the tech within the hobby.

analog has still benefits, benefits which seems not achivable for digital at the moment. partial 50mb/s doesnt change something for me, i still need analog. i dont need that detailed picture.

DJI goggles are not really box style.  They are just slightly larger slim style goggles to fit larger screens, heat dissipation, and transmitter.  But maybe my definition of box goggles is different.  I think of them as having a single large screen.

Oh shoot I always thought had only one single large screen does it not? I know it has the two eyeholes but when I tried them one I thought I recall seeing just one large screen behind it.

The DJI goggles are a single screen.

Is it though? Looking at the teardown around 15:30 mark, it seems that there are two screens. Or are those 2 receiving modules?

Honestly I feel like if they can drop the price a small margin with a version 2.0 they’d get a lot of people jumping into the game. Until then it’s just too pricey for me. Although I think it would be great for cinematic flying because you could see a more accurate representation of your framing and more detail and color etc.

With that being said, an idea just popped into my head. Does anyone know of any way to adjust your FPV camera to more accurately represent a gopro’s image attributes? I.e. aspect ratio and lensing?

Hmmm I could've sworn I thought I saw a single screen behind 2 eye holes. But looking at product descriptions it does indicate "x2" screens. Can some that owns one confirm real quick?

If it IS two screens, then that’s one killer optics set up to trick your brain into thinking you only ever saw one screen.

According to the spec, it is single screen. I can't verify whether that is true or not.

Nothing as far as software. You just need a camera to match the GoPro 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. And then find the perfect focal length lens to match the GoPro. Which will come close but not exactly the same. In addition, the FPV lens tend to have barrel distortions at the edges.

Not sure why we are debuting one or two screens. Smile If I am correct, the Fatshark and ORQA both use single screen too? It is just the screen is small (0.5"), hence the additional cost and allows for the slim style. I don't actually know the size of the DJI screen. But definitely bigger and likely cost less. It is likely somewhere between a box style and slim style. So 5zero7rc has a point as it being a hybrid. I guess we have to coin a new term for this style. How does boxy slim style? I can came up with a few more.

Mutt style
The middle child style
Slimbox style
Bug eye style
Borg style

Edit:Just realized that DJI is 2inch screen.
