"The Cube" is back - now in smart
#1
Do you remember "The Cube"? It was a lot of fun to fly, but a real pain to set up because I made it out of these flimsy pool noodles. Assembling them into a cube took time, and always required some wires hooked into the ground to keep it from collapsing and I got sick of this ordeal after two or three times. That's why I now built the "Smart Cube" which in order to be set up just needs to be unfolded, because it remembers it's shape! That's it. Easy to build and just as easy to pack up. Let me know what you think, I'm looking forward to your thoughts and comments. If there's enough interest I might do a build video ^^

I think I have some idea of how you're doing it but I'd like to learn more. I've been thinking about trying to come up with something like this for a while now and something that could be torn down and picked up easily would be great

That looks neat, would be great to see a build video or a general description of how the joints keep the shape when unfolded Smile
Find me on Youtube and Instagram. I currently fly: DRC Aura, NOX5R, Minimalist 112 and drive a scrap RC car

This is such a great idea for an obstacle, I really like it.

Are you using ropes through the pipes with springs for tension or some sort of elastic strap? I would also be interested in a build video or write up. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly, it's all just ropes and springs (and plastic tubes used for cable ducts). I'll consider a build video but first I need to figure out how to make it more stable because it tends to fall over pretty easily right now and I can't possibly add any more spring tension.

Hm... how about some simple corner pieces to "snap on" ... 3d-printed or something?

If you dedicated 4 of your pieces to form a permanent base, you can get clips for the cable conduit and attach those to planks for more stability and weight at the base, also it could then fold into a box..!?

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure I understand correctly but the issue currently is not that the structure hasn't enough weight. It's more the lack of sufficient structural stability against unwanted collapse. Of course it's supposed to collapse (that's the whole idea) but not due to impact or high winds. I am actually building a new, completely redesigned version which is a lot more rigid and at the same time easier and cheaper to build. So stay tuned Smile
