TBS Discovery Build
#1
I've had a set of Marspower 3508 700kv motors for a few months that I've wanted to use on a short range FPV build in the range of 450mm, problem was I couldn't find anything in this range that would work with the 3508s.  Then I found the Aerial Mob arm set that are made as an upgrade for the DJI F450 arms on the TBS Disco.  And it just so happens that the 3508s fit them perfectly.  TBS recommends the Naza-M flight controller for this but I have a spare Tarot ZYX-M FC I'll be using.  For a smaller build it's perfect as I find it much snappier and locked in than the other GPS FCs.  I've got the motors installed on the AM arms and I must say, they are extremely high quality and will make for a very clean looking build.  Other parts to follow are:
Aikon 30A ESCs
GH 4S 35C 5000mah lipo
Lumenier CS-800 FPV camera
Gitup Git 1 video camera
TBS Unify 200mW tx
TBS Triumph vtx antenna
Radio system - Radiolink AT9-S TX & RD9S RX
More to come.....

Isn't the AerialMob arms part of the TBS "Endurance upgrade"? imho, simply switching to a higher powered VTx and a UHF control system could at least move your vehicle into the "medium-range" category.

Also, is your vehicle equipped with the Disco gimbal?

Yes, the AM arms are part of the endurance upgrade.  But 3508 motors I have won't fit on a standard Disco.  I'm not interested in longer range, but with these arms I at least have the option of going up to 12" props. No gimbal, as I have a Tarot 650 that has a decent setup for video.  But if I was to get one, it would probably be the copterlab unit.

Got a little bit more done last night.  On the bottom plate, pigtail and TBS Core soldered on and Tarot FC put in place. Most guys just use zip ties to fasten FPV camera to the mounting board but I found some standoffs from a micro frame that worked perfectly. With the Core, you can see there'll be next to no actual wiring for the FPV system. Camera to core is only a couple cm and the vtx will be mounted on the top plate directly above the vtx in of the core so only 3 or 4 cm of wire there. I do have a Tarot OSD but I'm going to hold off installing that ATM

Soldered the 2 sets of header pins onto the top plate last night.  This is a nice setup with the receiver connected to the rear pins and traces in the plate going to the front pins for connection to the FC. So the radio system is totally isolated from the FPV system up front, which should make for very little interference.  I also decided to mount the PMU for the Tarot FC on top for better air flow. Next step is to get the Tarot OSD installed. I'm going to overlay it on top of the TBS Core OSD and hope it looks OK on the video screen

Fast forward a few steps and here's the finished build.  Hoped to do a maiden flight yesterday but not to be.  I'm using Aikon SEFM ESCs and it turns out that that the GPS type flight controllers like Naza and Tarot haven't kept up with the times and the firmware isn't really compatible with the newer Oneshot technology.  Therefore, even though everything looks good in the assistant software and LED startup sequence is correct, it just doesn't arm. I've got an expedited order for a set of T-Motor Air ESCs that'll fix the issue, but of course the forecast for the weekend is nothing but snow.........

Well, I did it again. I just intended to order some 26 guage wire for the LED system and ended up getting this as well

Might be a while, the Vector's totally new to me.  The manual's bigger than our town's telephone directory.  I've been working on the LED system the last couple nights, looks like it might actually work

Here's the underside of the top plate with the LED system installed. PDB is powering the LED distribution board in the middle with signal coming from a Naze32. Y-splitter from the Naze goes to the receiver and to the flight controller.  That way, the Naze is getting info from the FC and I can program the LEDs for arming status, throttle, turn signals, etc.  Holy crap that was a lot of planning and soldering, hope it works.............

Well. the whole programmable LED thing was a flop so I got rid of that. I think that due to the length of the Aerial Mob arms, when I installed the ET Vector, the bird was super unstable and I couldn't for the life of me get it tuned. I shortened the arms to a more reasonable length and played around with it this past winter, but I've kinda lost interest and it's just gathering dust right now.... Thanks for asking though
Dude, where's my quad?
