Sudden drop in signal after crash
#1
Thanks to my failing 9xr transmitter giving out on me, I had a nice crash today onto the wooden deck.
I've got things back up again, but now my signal on my FPV feed is horrendous.  Previously I could fly over basically my whole 5 acres with no noticeable signal loss.  After this crash I get horrible static as soon as I put even a bush between me and the quad, let alone a building or tree.  I even flew past my fence off to my left, did a flip and completely lost signal (like I got "No Signal" and a black screen) for a few seconds, even though the quad was still in plain site.  I flew back toward that area without the flip and while I didn't lose signal, I had so much static it was basically the same thing.

Any ideas what could be causing this?  The real problem is that I don't see any actual damage to components.

This is using a diversity receiver with a helical and one of those big flat antenna.

Did you change antenna on the VTX in between ? Can you check RP-SMA and SMA is correctly matched on the VTX and antenna?

Also try a different antenna if possible.

Also try a different channel on both VTX and VRX.

I didn't change the antenna until after I noticed the static. After that I switched from the TBS Triumph to a generic cloverleaf (which actually seems to get better signal than the Triumph).

I can't actually change channel because the channel change button broke on my VTX months ago. Which is why this is so strange. I only fly at my house and have been doing it just fine with no signal issues for months. After adding a high gain antenna to my diversity receiver months ago I have actually forgotten what static looks like. Now suddenly I get 100% static and signal loss in an area of open sky maybe 200 feet from where I stand.

I made a picture with satellite images.
If I'm at the black spot behind the house when I hit the blue area (which is on the other side of a line of trees which have no leaves right now) I get such bad static I can barely see.
When I start to hit the pink-to-red areas (which begin on the other side of a 6 foot tall wooden privacy fence) I get static in the first area, then really bad static in the second, then the red area is where my signal disappeared and my screen went black with "No Signal" displaying.
I went back hours later and tested again with the same results (though I didn't test the "No Signal" area).

Like I said, right before the crash I had been flying fine in all these areas and haven't had ANY static in months since adding a high-gain antenna.

Maybe the crash changed the VTx channel? Have you tried scanning with your VRx to see if reception is better on any other channel?

I am very very new, so take this with a grain of rice. But if it all happened after a crash I would say something has possibly broke the connection to your antenna, be it internal, or a damaged solder point maybe.
Another brainstorm might be could something during the crash have randomly caused your vtx to somehow change channels?
Like I said I might be way off, but maybe it will jog an idea from one of the experts here.
Wishin you the best of luck!

Just got outside for some tests that are probably pretty conclusive.
1) Verified the static still exists a day later. It does, though the shape of where is slightly different but basically the same.
2) Verified it wasn't a channel issue by scanning for channel. 3 of them showed the picture when the quad was right next to me, but only 1 showed (via auto-scan) when the quad was far away. 5820, 5828 and 5835 on channels A, B, and D respectively. Flew in all 3 and all 3 had static issues.
3) Attached my 25mw Cam and VTX combo from my micro to my main quad. Verified it was transmitting on a different channel, then changed it's channel to the same one the big VTX was transmitting from. Crystal clear picture. Could fly in the areas where I previously had static with no static. I got a little static when I got really far away in a different area but that's to be expected from 25mw.

Today in fact my main VTX was getting static when on the ground maybe 30 feet from where I stood. Also the crystal clear picture from the micro VTX made me realize how bad the picture from my main VTX looked. I had another post on here recently asking about "wavy lines" on the video and combine those 2 issues together...I'm pretty sure my VTX is fried.

Anyone got any good suggestions for a VTX? Are there any out there with switchable power (25/200/600mw etc), a built in pig-tail and under $40? Also preferably one that's easy to swap out the wiring for an Eachine ET200.

FPVmodel.com has a couple of switchable 40 channel VTx's. A dragonfly and an aomway - each are under $35. The dragonfly is stackable.

(I have the non-switchable dragonfly 200mW and it's light and works great!)
