strong standoffs, anyone?
#1
Which standoffs do you use? Are you happy with them? Do they get bent at the ends easily if you crash lightly?

I've been flying through a supply of 35mm aluminium alloy standoffs from Banggood really fast and I'm wondering if this is normal for quads or that these are just weak shit standoffs. After one or two not-too-bad crashes I'll often find that I'm able to wiggle one or more standoffs around. They become bent at the ends (primarily at the bottom) and the inner threading gets damaged too to the point that bolt loses grip and the top deck of the frame can get a bit wobbly. I'll stop flying at that point Smile

I'm happy to keep replacing them but I usually read that it's the props that you'll be replacing the most, not standoffs! So, which standoffs do you use and are you happy with them?

That's a feature of cheap chinese alloys, espeially on 5mm ones.

I use nylon spacers like this one: http://pl.rs-online.com/web/p/dystanse-g...b/1026413/
Sorry, the site is polish, but you can find it trough product number: HTSN-M3-30-6-1 (30 is the length in this case)
This material is very tough, I didn't break a single one yet, threading still holds.

EDIT: As a bonus - those 6mm hex standoffs are lighter than 5mm round "banggood aluminum".

The trick is to keep your quadcopter as light as possible so impact is not as big in crashes Smile most importantly try not to crash at all LOL Big Grin

I think the shape of the standoff matters. I use hex shape nylon standoffs with very long metal bolts and I barely have to replace them...

If you are looking for aluminium alternative maybe try this: http://www.banggood.com/10pcs-M3-Black-R...71462.html

@Konrad: really, nylon standoffs? Those snap off with me if I so much as look at them! But I've got Banggood stuff, I'll look into those rs-online ones.

@Oscar: Don't crash. Got it. Smile I'll try those aluminium ones. I had also considered that my bolts may not be long enough. They're about 5-6mm long.

But as I hear it it's supposed to be unusual for standoffs to need replacing this often. If it's truly my flying style I'd expect to have to replace peripherals like props and vtx antennas regularly but I barely need to.

yea I would say use 10mm bolts if possible Smile if the middle of the standoff is hollow it will bend more likely in crash.

I am like Oscar and use much longer screws in my standoffs, hardly ever break or bend them, usually a $400 gopro smashes first..have to save the standoffs at all costs.

This cheap nylon stuff is only good to mount your FC, that's it.

And seriously - when I got those panzernylon standoffs, I tried to bite them and almost broke a tooth ;p Also - Oscar is using them too (demonrc ones right?)

The stronger you make the standoffs, then other parts of your quad will take the force of the crash. Better to have standoffs break than rest of the quad.

Unless your standoffs are the weakest link that chops electronic components on its way. And also a broken standoff is a mayor hit for integrity of some of the frames - ask me how I know Wink

The different standoffs are still on their way but I received the longer screws in the mail last week. Got 15mm screws in there now and it's a real difference already. I've been crashing happily all weekend without any wobbling in my frame like before.
Note to self: long screws!
