I have enough money to buy a Spektrum DX8 Gen 2 or a Frsky Taranis 9XD Plus.
My problem is I can't choose which one to buy because they both have their flaws in each way and in saying that they are both good in many ways. My question is which one should I buy? I my it's possible I would also like a reason buying Spektrum over Frsky or Frsky over Spektrum.
Frsky is a lot more common in the mini quad world.
It's also economical for people like me who have many models as the receivers with telemetry are inexpensive. I cannot comment on spektrum too much as all I have to go off of is price since I never used one
Simple: FrSky has more features and more accessible telemetry, Spektrum is arguably nicer and easier to use. In reality, it all boils down to which one is more comfortable in your hands.
I use spektrum for racers and taranis for bigger quads: having pots/side levers is really nice for gimbal control on AP platforms, and spektrum don't get them until pretty high in the line-up. The main thing missing for me is telemetry. Knowing when you battery is toast or your signal is low, without having to look is useful and you don't get that with spektrum.
I look at it like this: if your going to stay within the confines of what I would call a normal hobbyist- as in your not going to get real techy or go 100% nerd, stick with Spektrum.
If, on the other hand, you plan to get your nerd on and you are going to eventually end up doing advanced flight like long range fpv or maybe even some FPV racing, then maybe the Taranis is for you.
That being said, both radios will fly well in either scenario. Having a Taranis and never flying anything but the inductrix is overkill, but it will do it just fine. At the end of the day, the Spektrum radio is a solid radio with no real problems but pounds to pennies the Taranis is going to give you way more flexibility.
For me the only reason to use any spektrum stuff are the gimbals on the radio. Other than that I don't see any reason not to buy a Taranis unless you want to spend more and something better like some of the top end radios like futaba.
I bought the Taranis and an OrangeRX module so now I can have the flexibility of the Taranis but also fly some of the bnf stuff from Horizon on Spektrum! It costs more but gives a lot of options.
Even the Taranis X9D Plus is not approved for use in europe.
They not following the rules from the ETSI 1.9.1 regulation.
But i would not make a big deal of it.
Mephi, I mean the ETSI EN 300 328 V1.9.1
As far as i know there is a ETSI EN 300 328 V1.8.1 conform FW available and the Taranis is only sold with it in Europe now.
There is no need for ETSI EN 300 328 V1.8.1 conform products to redo the certification to meet ETSI EN 300 328 V1.9.1.
So if you do not Play around with the FW everything is legal with Taranis in Europe...
It's not an obvious choice but i think it all depends on what you want :
You want a good and functional Transmitter with great gimbals --) go Spektrum but know that telemetry will come at a big price and size.
You want all functions in a great radio at smaller price --) Go FrSky taranis
i use small to micro receivers on both and you can find them a about the same price. If you want a bigger receiver the price of spektrum goes up quickly.
As stated before i have both transmitters and keep going back to the Spektrum DX9 because i think it feels better in my hands and i hardly ever really use the telemetry on the taranis ( it is set up). But in some casses it 's just simpler to use the taranis for it's adjustable units, functions,...
if i have to give 1 up and never use it again i think i would keep the DX9.
Just do as me and buy both :-)
