SOLVED: Esc + motor burned

(04-May-2017, 08:58 AM)unseen Wrote: If you can hover at 50% throttle or less, then there is enough power to fly. Smaller props will reduce your power output and larger props will be too much for your current 12A ESCs. The new ones will allow you to use more aggressive 5" props like 5045 bullnose designs and also let you use 4S power instead of 3S.

Although you can use the EMax 2204 2300kv motors on 4S with 5045BN props, such a configuration is on the edge of what the motors will take.

Are these ESCs good enough ?
I mean , I don't need the top high end ESCs on the market, but at least something that don't burn like paper. By the way happened again today. Both Motor and ESC wasted. I'm fu#@!% pissed !

That's really bad news. Sad

I've not used those particular ESCs, but they should be fine.

Hi Unseen,

Is any of these ESCs below going to have better (or any) protection for avoiding this kind of burn ?
Please have a look:
- http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-7...a-ubec-_JM

Everytime this problem happens I lose both ESC + Motor.

Thanks

Those are kind of old technology to be honest but they're OK.

Do you need ESCs with a BEC or do you have some other way to power your flight controller and receiver?

I'm looking for ESCs with BEC if possible, it's a lot easier to power the FC with this as it comes "automatically" from the ESC wires. I'm not sure if my PDB does offer 5v output.

What PDB do you have? It's normally fairly obvious if it does or doesn't provide 5V power.

Here is the link, that's exactly the one I have, very simple:

By the way, these crappy ESCs I have can be somehow configured to prevent this nasty behavior ? I mean it doesn't have any kind of protection for situations like this ?

Thanks,

Unseen,

I have a chance to buy this from the US next week, a friend will be there, so if there is any good ESC you could recommend from Hobbyking would be great !

The PDB that you linked is just to simplify the wiring, so there's no 5V or other regulator on it.

There is no way to prevent the ESCs that you have from overloading if the motors get prevented from spinning. The vast majority of ESCs don't have this feature either. If you want true current limiting on an ESC then you have to look at the KISS ESCs or the latest BLHeli_32 ESCs, none of which are cheap.

I'll get back to you with some suggestions as to what might be available at Hobbyking.

Thanks, I'm not looking for expensive stuff at this point, I thought it was standard feature, if that's not the case I better learn how to fly quickly I guess Smile
But any good recommendation for 20a ESCs would be awesome

O dear, this time I think was my bad, because I accidentally took off in ACRO mode and it took me some extra time to figure out why the quad was flipping !
But yes, it's a learning curve, is getting expensive !!!
My wife is already asking questions about this  Huh

I took her to an expensive barbecue house here in Sao Paulo, the real meat   Big Grin

Ok, I changed the burned motor and ESC and now I have a different issue.
The other front motor (#4) has also the ESC toasted, did not catch fire, but is clearly tosted, I could see that by removing the plastic protection.
Guys, I´m offering one leaver in good condition, no drinking/smoking/drugs. I´ll need to raise funds to keep this up !

Thanks
